So I am going down around the end of september for the first time in about 15 years. My condo sits on Leeward Drive on the waterways. I plan on trying to try my hand at some surf fishing, and peer fishing, also thinking about kayaking. Any help, advice, recomendations, things to read, would be greatly appreciated (rods, bait, hook size, areas to fish, ect.) as I know nothing at this point!!!!

Or if anyone is up for me and my wife tagging along, and being a bit of a mentor to us that would be great! My wife has never fished in the ocean and I am really excited to introduce her to it!!!!

september - november is a great time for bull reds. Best bait for reds that time of year is skip jack hands down. But live mullet is also good especially for the mackeral that will be out. Port aransas, bob hall pier , and packery channel/brigde are good options if u dont have a boat.

Nope no boat at this time, I might rent one or charter one even but nothing for sure at this point.

Sounds like you have the $$ to hire a guide. Phil Spencer, would be an excellent choice. He will wade, kayak, or take a boat. He is also an excellent teacher of the sport. Would be a good investment.
There are several superb guides in the area. Call around, talk with them about how well they can accommodate your needs, and make a decision. Phil, I choose, because I know he will meet any of your needs.

Do a search with these key words: surf, SBH, PINS, gear.

If you plan to soak bait from the beach, here is some food for thought:

Rods: 8-12ft I like 12 or 13 foot rods myself.

Reels: Match your rod. Spinning for spinning, baitcast for baitcast. I use spinning. Others baitcast, I'm just not good with them. The key here is to get something big enough to hold at least 20# mono, at least 200 yards. I usually go with 40 or 50# braid with 300-500 yards on the spool. I buy braid off Ebay for $50 from China, same stuff they sell here, just cheaper and different name and takes a little longer in the mail.

Bait for September: I always use at least 2 rods, both with double-drop leaders. One will have 2/0 and 3/0 circle or kahle hooks tipped with shrimp and fishbites (targeting pompano or whiting). The other rod will have 4/0 up to 8/0 circle hooks tipped with cut whiting, skipjack or mullet and targeting redfish.

You can fish anywhere along the beach. I like SBH or PINS, but just try to find a spot that isn't right next to people playing in the water.

You can also search on here for posts from surf fisherman such as, but not limited to: Ziacatcher, JohnnyReb, Tyler, Bighead and Oso Yakman to name a few.

Send picture of wife.......no no , just kidding. First thing buy one of the books on saltwater fishing that are here on this site. Read it twice or 3 times to work on your terminology. Come down and find a fishing guide and do a couple of trips ( also well worth the money ). We know a guide or 2 incase a reference is needed. Then you will be ready to head out on your own.

I do have the money to hire a guide for a day, maybe 2 max but I was looking at going out on a boat for that. I we will be there for a full week so I need to figure out some other options when we are not on a guided trip and since I am not dragging my boat 12 hours I figured surf and kayak would give me some good do it your self type opprotunities, or if I could hook up with some of the locals and tag a long that might be really cool too (I'll bring the beer Laughing )

I guess I should mention, I am not a novice to salt water fishing,or fishing in general, I just grew up fishing out of a boat (yeah I know that sounds really snobby lol) and its been about 15 years since I have fished the padre island area.. So I am a bit clueless lol.

A good guide will just be a beginning. If you go this way, pick his brain; where to wade, where to kayak, why are we stopping here, why are we using this bait, and so on.
Would be glad to take you on a trip. There are many on this board, if not most, who would humble me. That said I do enjoy company. Ask BigRed about first trips. Give me a PM if you want to go.
As I can tell, you will get assistance here, so good luck.

You have plenty of time to figure this out. The end of September can be one of the best times of the year to give this area a try. There will be lots of good information between now and then, so enjoy the ride! Smile

Yeah thats what I'm hoping! I figure if I start planning and trying to learn now, by september I should hopefully have enough knowledge to catch something lol.

My wife and I normally try to schedule a trip down to CC and fish the packery jetties that time of the year. If you are interested in that sort of fishing PM me and we can try to set something up.
