| In looking thru some old photos I saw one of the toll both going to padre from CC/Bluff - correct? I can sorta remember going through that thing but can remember the year it was discontinued...and exactly where it was located. Can some Corpus natives help me? Let me know date and location. Thanks !!!!! |

IT WAS THERE WHEN I MOVED TO CC IN 1962 AND IT COST A DOLLAR A CAR TO GO TO THE ISLAND. I LEFT TO GO TO COLLEGE IN 1969 AND I THINK THEY TOOK IT DOWN AFTER IT WAS PAID FOR SOMETIME AROUND 1970 -72. _________________ Please let us remember the difference between genius and stupidity... genius has its limits.

The old pay location check point was just east of Laguna shores rd. Was also straight across from the old JP office/jail (judge Cox) in the Bluff back then.
Last time I recall it still standing was early 70s. It survived Hurricane Celia I do remember.
They moved the sherriffs office from there to its current location in the late 80s. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

Your mixed up a little. The ferry to cross Port/A ship channel was always free & still is to this day. (state)
He was referring to the JFK causeway toll (Elevated rd from Flour Bluff to Padre Island)
Back when it was built a toll was imposed till it was paid for. (early 60s till early 70s)
Back then there was also a swing bridge at the ICW instead of the current High arc bridge. When ever a barge came down the ICW the traffic was stopped to let them thru. (imagine that today)
I also recall the toll like 45cents never a dollar.
Whats cool is they took it down as soon as it was paid for. Never see that happen today! _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

| There was a old bait/tackle shop right before the booth on the south side. We would stop and check out the parrot on the way to the beach. How about the original Red Dot Baitstand? Ace Kimbrel ran it....it was located just north of where Snoopys is now. Early 60's/70's. Love to see some pictures of those days! gb |

A&H tackle shop was at where Wind & Wave kayak shop is now. Also closer to Waldron rd was Eds sporting goods. (Near where the pizza hut is now)
Back when it was 4 lanes b4 the freeway was built you could get bait & tackle at a dozen diffent places from Waldron to Laguna Shores rd. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

Thanks for the help....just what I needed to know. I thought it was somewhere around Laguna and didn't remember anything being out there except Frenchies until you got to the beach. |

Hey John are you making fun of us older people????????
Hey guys remember how far the traffic would back up when the swing bridges would open. Seems like they would always open on a weekend or Holiday.
I can't count the times my truck would overheat waiting in line....Damn good memories...

| About the tolls for the P/A ferry and the Padre Island Causeway: I lived in Port Aransas in the 50s and ran boats out of Del Mar Yacht Basin, Hops Fish House and Marthews Sports Center. The ferry was privately owned and the toll was a dollar each way. The Padre Island causeway was a dollar each way too. In the spring of each year there a contest to see who could walk from Port Isabel to near the present site of Bob Hall pier. I had a '47 Willis Jeep and drove the Island several times from Flour Bluff to Port Isabel before the Mansfield cut was made. The present Hwy 361 up the Island was opened in '57. |
