Small, but strong hook, and a fingernail sized piece of shrimp dropped right on a piling. This time of year you dont have hordes of pinfish to sneak through... usually. Good luck!

Speargun, single band, from about 3 feet away.
Deep breath, swim down, locate keeper-size fish, SHOOT.
Repeat as necessary to reach daily bag limit. |

| Don't laugh, i use a 18' crappie pole with 20lb test, a small circle hook and splitshot with ghost shrimp. Just drop it in between the rocks. Don't even use a reel. |

Hiya!,
I am freelining ghost shrimp with a small, but strong, hook. I target the rock drop offs at the jetties. I do use a split shot. You get snagged from time to time, so take extra tackle. I've tried running a deep drop with a float, but you still get snagged and the resistance of the float would cause the sheephead to let go. _________________ FISH ON!!,

Get the small mustad hooks size 1 or 2, the little, thick, straight ones. They are like 1.50 a pack at Wally Martinez or Academy, live shrimp works best for me, I ironically kill them though by hooking them like dead shrimp, if you hook them through the horn like you're trout fishing they will steal it everytime. The worst thing you can do is use too big a hook, make sure hook is smaller but strong and don't forget pliers ! _________________ But you ain't got no legs Lt. Dan, I know that |

I have something like that too. It telescopes. I think I may just get out my 12 foot surf rod instead and throw a 5500 abu on it with light test. Then I can use those little number 2 mustad leaders and a split shot. The mainline will give and then I can just replace with another mustad pretied leader.
Yes there are ghost shrimp available this time of year. Look when the tide is lower. Also you can't dig bait on the Padre Island National Seashore and the limit is 20. |

I have been catching the ghost shrimp near the jetties. Just look for the holes near the waters edge. They are here year around. Also, if there is a ;ot pf shell mixed in the sand, you will not find as many. Look for areas where the sand is a fine grain. _________________ FISH ON!!,

For jetty sheepies, 5500 spooled with 40-50# braid atop medium heavy uglystick. #1-1/0 (depending on shrimp size) long shank hook. Long shank makes for easier hook removal and accomodates the whole shrimp. Adding a little twist to the offset will help with hookups. Tie a dropper loop for the hook and tie an overhand knot at the tag end. Run tag end thru sinker of choice (I prefer bank type) and lightly pinch split shot on line above knot. When you get hung, sinch down the drag, thumb the spool and pull straight back. 8 times in 10 you' ll either straighten the hook or pull off the sinker; either way you save time n tackle. Milkcrate with pole holders and bucketl come inhandy for carrying and holding stuff. Don' t forget your fish
