Well, it all started at 3:00 am Sunday morning. My wife and I had been planning a Christmas camping trip for several weeks now. We even went as far as buying her a fishing license for the first time in thirty years. Saturday night I cannot sleep like a nine year old waiting to go fishing on a weekend morning. As I am loading the car barefoot of course, I smash my foot into a 2x12 I have laid on the driveway. Well that ended my middle of the night getting ready.
So now it

You asked for it, so here it is. Laughing So now it's getting daylight and I am raring, ready to go. As my wife finishes loading her stuff in the truck, she asks, "Have you got everything you need?" I answer, "Of course." Last famous words. So off we go, destination, Coleto Creek Reservoir. Hopefully we can catch a few fish and have a couple days of relaxation. I have one goal-catch a big blue cat.

Over the years, I have occasionally caught blue cats on jug lines up to 10 pounds. Since planning this trip, I have been saving bait just for this occasion, huge ribbonfish, mullet and shrimp. As I near Bayside, I realize I have left all the bait at the house. Oh well I'll stop at Bayside and pick up some dead shrimp. So I make a quick stop for bait and to check my old truck. I only use my truck for pulling my boat and this is the first time it has been out of town in a couple of years.

Everything looks great and at least I now have some shrimp for channel cats and hopefully I can catch a perch or two for bait. Next a quick stop at Refugio for an old man pit stop and gas for the boat and truck. I check the engine of the truck again and everything looks great. Finally, we are headed for Goliad and eventually Coleto Creek.

When we arrive at the lake, I stop at the entrance to pay for the one night stay. When the ranger looks outside, he comments, "Your truck is pouring coolant." I quickly go outside and it looks like a green cascading waterfall coming from my old truck. I quickly pop the hood and cannot locate the exact place the leak is coming from. After a more thorough search, it appears the top of my radiator has rotted out. Oh well, at least we are finally at the lake. I'll worry about the radiator on another day like tomorrow, Christmas Eve.

We launch the boat and head out of the cove. I quickly realize the lake is one churned up washing machine with the wind gusting near 30. I take my wife back to shore so she can at least enjoy the nature trail and some peace and quiet. As I head back out, she comments, "We need at least one fish for supper or you're taking me out to a restaurant in Victoria. The thought of a restaurant in Victoria on a camping trip just about made me want to puke. So off I go in hopes of catching at least one bass for supper that night.

Well, five hours later all I have come up with is one undersized bass to show for my efforts. One last hope-I will fish the cove near the boat ramp. They have lots of bass tournaments at Coleto and all the bass weighed in get realeased at the ramp. I go almost all the way to the ramp so I can drift down the shoreline with the wind. Second cast with a Creme black and blue worm- bam-solid hit and a 16" bass! Supper at last. Very Happy Christmas Blues part I.

With supper finally taken care of, now for the task at hand, my big blue cat. It is getting close to 5 PM and I still only have dead shrimp for my juglines. I will stop at the large tree just to the left of the dam you can see can see from the campground. I figure I'll tie up and drop pieces of shrimp off the bottom and catch a half dozen perch to go with the dead shrimp. Well, no go on this one. Five minutes of this and not even a nibble. Oh well, time is up and it looks like there will only be channel cats waiting for me in the morning.

It is now starting to get dark, luckily my son has repaired all my running lights so I at least will not get a ticket from the game warden that will probably be waiting for me when I return to the ramp. I decide to go ahead and rig each jugline with three hooks spread out from a couple feet from the jug, one in the middle and then one close to the weight on the bottom. I have ten bleach bottles with all the proper gear tag information on them. It takes me an hour or so to get everything rigged and baited for the night. In most of my experiences juglining I will probably catch one catfish for every 10 hooks I put out. I would imagine someone that knew what they were doing would have a much better catch per hook ratio, but with 30 hooks, if I can catch three keeper catfish, I will be happy.
