Molly and I fished the Intracoastal today and brought back some fish. We anticipated a warm sunny day with calm winds and were rewarded.
All were caught with Fishbites with a 2-hook bottom rig. We had live shrimp and cut bait, but both got sucked off the hooks in an instant. We fished south of the JFK bridge in the middle of the channel. The current was light when we started, but our 3-oz pyramid sinkers slid along the bottom later in the afternoon, pushed by a strong current. Strong current and moving bait resulted in more grass fouling hooks, which made it more difficult for fish to find the bait later in the afternoon.
Molly landed a 34-inch drum. We use light, limber equipment, so there were moments that she did not know if she could turn the fish, as line was stripping off the reel quickly.
But she did it! We snapped a quick photo and released it.
We were targeting sand trout, but whiting couldn't resist getting onboard. Here's some photos.

Looks like you had a nice day. Question, who caught that nice ice coke?
Good report BB. |

Regarding the ice coke, I added it just for size reference. Some of the sand trout were bigger than typical.
We use frozen soda bottles in the cooler. Cheaper than buying ice every time, plus you can keep the fish covered in ice. Most people toss a couple frozen gallon jugs of water into their coolers. But we want all of our fish in contact with ice. |

Nice catch! I'd like to get my wife on some of those. Any places from shore that typically hold sand trout? _________________ Aggie 81'

I think we saw you if both of you were wearing big floppy hats. We could only get dink trout and they were hard to come by. Once that barge passed and the current started ripping we couldn't catch any dinks in the ICW when we went that route. But it sure was cool to see the swarms of ducks flying over in the bright sunshine. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Look for a thread I started asking about sand trout. Lots of people replied to my question.
The best place for catching them is from a boat however. |

Like you, we also floated live shrimp under bobbers with discouraging results, so we switched tactics and reeled 'em in.
We wear the big straw hats to keep the sun at bay, plus that particular straw hat does not turn inside out in a strong wind or at planing speeds in a boat.
Hats are always a problem for me to find a size large enough. When I find one that works, I stock up. Probably have at least eight of those hats now.
Since I'm fair-skinned, I always use a maxi-brim hat, long sleeves and long pants, sun gloves and face mask. Sunscreen maybe. In other words, I have the classic "farmer tan."
