| After living in corpus for 2 1/2 years and catching what ALMOST seems like everything..the black drum has eluded me for some reason. I have fished nueces bay, the oso, packery, Laguna madre and the surf with 0 black drum. I have used mullet dead and alive, cut bait, shrimp dead and alive, squid and fish bites of all flavors.. What is the issue? |

You Sir...... Must be my polar opposite. I have caught almost every game fish in the surf except for Redfish. My sons have caught countless Reds on my poles, but yet I have caught none. The year has changed..... And I will catch Redfish and you will catch Black. Happy New Year!!!!! _________________ Stinger-A |

For whatever it's worth, 2013 is the year of the water snake in China. Maybe the fishing will be good this year! _________________ E Pluribus Unum |

Hiya!,
I seem to be the king of "Big Nasties," oversized black drum that is. Tyler swares I carry a stuffed black drum every winter/spring for photo ops.
If you are looking for oversized, may I suggest fishing Indian Point Pier in Jan and Feb. Look for days with a strong SE wind 20 to 25 mph. Fish during tide changes in the afternoon and early evening. 4pm to midnight seems to be the better times. Use fresh crabs and mantis shrimp (sealice). Dont use frozen. Make sure you fish the end of the pier and into the wind.
I used to catch a lot of keepers, but dont really target them anymore. This time of the year I would target jetties with fresh dead shrimp and ghost shrimp. Cooler water temps should keep pinfish at bay. You are still gonna have to deal with whiting, reds, pomps, and sheepies; but begger cant be chosers
I had not wade fish in a long time and now my leg will not allow it, but I also get a lot of keepers at Dead Man's hole, Kate's hole, and behind Fish Pass. I target the drop offs near the oyster reefs at the first two location with fresh dead shrimp and live shrimp. Behind Fish Pass, there is a sand bar. At sun up I would wade out to the south of the pass, free line my bait onto the sand bar. Once the sun got up I would wade on to the sand bar and toss the bait into the deeper water. Caught a lot of drum, reds, and trout throughout my youth there.
Hope that helps. _________________ FISH ON!!,

Now that is some great info. Also you might consider clems, marker 37 around mid february to the end of march using crab and sea lice. Marker 37 usually seems to be less crowded than any of the other piers in the area. Sometimes the nastier the weather, the better the fishing when it comes to big uglies _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

X2 on the nasty weather. BD dont seem to care much. If you can avoid the pinfish, a small shrimp on the bottom works wonders for them. Reddot, Marker 37, the channel are all great spots.

Here is what I have experienced with drum related to weather. On calm days, they tend stay in deeper water such as channels. At night and windy days that have the water churnned up, they move shallower water especially near drop offs.
When fishing for big drum, if the wind was out of the SE and E, Indian Point pier was the better side of the bay. Out of the N and W, Oso pier was better. When it was calm, the intracoastal channel was the place to be. _________________ FISH ON!!,
