Friends, Wayne and Steve, invited me to join them at Copano Pier Saturday night.

My fishing for teensy sand trout and whiting was instantaneous. Hit bottom; got fish. But not many fit to filet. It'd be a great place to introduce youngsters to fishing.

However, Steve released a 41 in drum shortly before I arrived, so there are monsters of the deep there.

Then the wind died and switched direction 180-degrees. Temps dropped approximately 15 degrees in a short while. Most all of the fair weather anglers fled.

These guys know how to enjoy the weekend with wind break, cots, cook stove and real food. Wild pig and pie. Wish I had known before eating a big supper prior to driving there. I hid my emergency rations of sardine cans. But we enjoyed relaxing and visiting, which is always an option when the fishing sucks.

Compared to BHP, it was not crowded and people were spread out.

The bridge construcion project has made it very difficult to see the entrance drive after dark. It is not marked with signs. I passed it the first time.

We fished the south side. The longer north side has a majority of its lights out. Nobody knew why. Guess if you wanted to pier fish in solitude, that'd be the place to go. But if you have fished there before and expect to fish under lights, you might want to rethink going there.

Pier fee is $3 per rod. No other admission fees. However, lots of rods were spread out in many places.

I like to fish the Copano Bay 'pier' when in the area. I've caught lots of good sized keepers there and lots of undersized also. Yes, it is a good place to take a kid at night because He'll surely catch something that will keep him busy.

I totally agree.....I take my grandkids there all the time and they love it....for about 2 hours..and then they just lose all interest and start doing other things....oh well...they are allowed to since they are still very young...but its a good start. I would like for them to remember me for teaching them how to fish....like I remember my grandfather doing...the worlds greatest fisherman....in my eyes...Smile
