OK, been fishing the Texas coast since I was barely able to hold on to a rod, and after 50+ years, have decided I have to give gigging a try.
Not sure how I have missed out on it this long, but after looking at pics of LED flounder lights, it looks like gigging has progressed to where it more flexible as the size of the equipment has scaled down.

I am not looking for honeyholes (although wouldn't turn them down Smile ) but rather I am looking for general information. Such as...

Is it better to go on a new moon, full moon, or one of the quarters?
Better when tide is moving or at a stand?
High tide or low?
Would assume sand is better, but maybe not... How about shell bottoms as is common around POC etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I prefer any calm night with clear water, and gigging year round practically can be productive although right now is a great time. Full moons tend to make the flounder skiddish as the light keeps them alert. I built a LED based light some time back, but don't really like the color of it. Bluish-white is a horrible color to use under water as it'll be reflected back by the slightest murk. Yellow would be a much better color, but I can't find bright enough LEDs in that color.

Gonefishing, I recently built a double headed led gigging light with two 440 lumen ,7000k (cool White ) and they are plenty bright even in murky water although clear water is always better.... I bought them off the internet from torchstar. Very Happy

Calm night is always good but not necessary.

Right on about full moon making fish skittish but possible - just gotta be fast.

Some of my best nights have been before the big moon gets overhead around the full moon. When she is big and gets to about the 11:00 position, I shut down.

While not always the case, especially in full migration, a general rule of thumb is hard sand in warm and cool weather, more muddy bottom (not the big down kind), when it is really cold.

Another question I have is how do you estimate the size of the flounder? Would hate to put a spike in one's head only to have it be 1/2" short.
