|
|
| Been lurking this site EVERYDAY for almost 5 years, I finally registered and this is my first report. We, wife and 2 kids, ended up somewhere around the 18MM at about 7:30 am Sunday morning. It was cloudy and the wind was from the NNE and blowing somewhere around 20 mph. Usually whenever we make it down to PINS its blowing from the south which makes it hard for me as I cast my fly rod with my right hand. Instead of catching bait and throwing the long rods out like usual my son and I quickly rigged up the fly rods and got to slinging some flies. We both have new fly reels and were anxious to break them in with a real fish. Current was definitely moving at a really good clip southbound. We were basically ankle deep, neither of us wanted to get much further after reading ROBDOG's PINS report from Friday. Well 20 minutes goes by and I'm still patiently awaiting the arc in the rod. It's been years since I've got a decent fish on the fly and even then it was a small hybrid striper from Braunig Lake. Then finally I feel something almost alien, something is pulling back and its pulling hard and for the first time ever I actually got to use the drag on a fly reel. Damn what a feeling that was, rod was bent over like never before. I even saw a lot of my backing go through the guides. What a sweet sound the drag makes when a fish makes a run. Finally get it on the beach and its a 30" red. Sweet. Did a CPR and it went off like nothing happened. I thought to my self if I don't catch another fish all day I'll be good. After a while we decide to go ahead and put the big rods out. I got lucky with cast-netting 2 mullet. 30 min later the big rod goes down and my 13 year old son grabs it, the fish heads south and he fights it for 10 minutes. It's a 12 ft rod and and after sometime his arms start hurting, but he sticks with it, We didnt get to see what it was because I screwed up, the fish was in the wade gut and I thought I could grab the line and "help" him get it in. As soon as grabbed it poof went my 30lb Power pro and bye bye went the fish. I was ticked I shouldn't have touched it, lesson learned. We went on the rest of the day using the fly rods catching a few Pomps, small Jacks and Whiting. It seemed like conditions were getting better around 2:00 but we had to head back up to San Antonio, I've got work tomorrow and the kids have school. Damn I love PINS. I envy you guys that live down there. |

| Glad to hear you got into some fish. I stayed home today for some honey-do's. I am thinking about hitting it again tomorrow. |

From one "newb" to another, WELCOME!
Thanks for a great report.
Makes me sad that it will probably be another month before I head down there again. _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman

I think you guys were just south of my wife and I yesterday.
Glad to hear you guys got into something...it was nothing but smallish whiting for me. I saved 6 of them to freeze for use as cut bait at BHP this week...hoping to pick up a couple of reds tomorrow...see if the Smacks will cooperate with the gigantic shrimp that the bait shops have for sale.
