When fishing on/near the underwater green lights, what kind of rig is best suited to take advantage of the light? My cousin has a house in the Padre Isles subdivision, near Bob Hall Pier, and her backyard is part of the channels that lead into the Laguna Madre. There is a green light about 10 yards from her deck. There are always fish in there, mostly trout. I fished there one time with a friend using only TTF Lil'SpeckKiller tandems. My friend swore by them but we didn't catch anything. The neighbor across the channel was constantly reeling them in (he also had a light about 10-15 yards from his property). It seemed every 2nd - 3rd cast, he was taking fish off of his hook. Not too sure if he was using live bait or artificial lures, but what kind of advise can you give me to ensure next time I go there, I will catch my fair share of fish? What kind of rod/reel/line/bait should I be using? What kind of motion or technique should I be applying? I will also be heading out to go fish under some green lights in Rio Hondo/Arroyo, just south of Port Mansfield. Can I apply the same techniques? My friend lives about a quarter mile from the mouth of the Rio Hondo and he also has a big green light in the water. Thanks in advance.

Fish the outer edges of the light, thats where the larger trout are lurking. Not right in it.

It depends...

What does it depend on you ask?

It depends on what the fish are hungry for that night! LOL

Sorry, but like any other fishing there is no one size fits all answer. I have a couple of lights around me and sometimes I can get hits on anything with a glow and sometimes I can't even get a trout to follow a lure. It is very educational though...watching fish turn after the lure and follow it, then turn away more often than not, until you find the right combination of retrieve, lure, depth, etc.

If you just want to hook something, I've never failed to get hits on live shrimp when the fish are feeding but they are a PITA at night. You may also catch ribbon fish, sand trout, pin perch, etc.

I love the glow/chartreuse paddle tails on a 1/4-1/8oz jighead! Then again, that was under the white lights of a pier!

IN the green lights I have found that speck rigs and 2" or 3" paddle tail shad, made by Tsunami or Storm work great. The shad are internally weighted and it makes for a very natural, balanced swimming motion.

I usually cast way beyond on the light or try to pull my lure through the edges. I let it sick for about a 4 count before the retrieve. I start with a slow steady retrieve with no bounces, just let the lure do the work. If they aren't hitting that, I switch to a retrieve where I start my rod tip low and gently lift it 3-4 feet, and then lower the rod to the original point and let the lure fall slowly back down, then slow lift again, etc. It makes the shad look like its struggling to get to the surface. They usually will hit it on the fall.

I have a light and fish it quite a bit. The best I have found is any small shad artificial no longer than 3". I fish it only with a hook and no weight. That and the small DOA shrimp will usually outfish anything else. My favorite is little blue and silver "little fishies".

TTF Speck rigs in any glo color or red. Buy extra bodies if you can find them - trout will tear em up.

My go to is a Lil Fishies white/red on a 1/16 oz jig head. Deadly!

Thanks for all the input. I will be expanding my tackle box with lures that were recommended in this thread. I might try out the gear on Wed, so if I catch monsters, I'll make sure to post pics Wink

I saw some good results from Yak on one of his reports fishing under a green light.
