I am currently involved in making one "scouting" trip down PINS per week to monitor migrating bird numbers. They will peak right before the first "REAL" cold frontal passage and then will instantly disappear and migrate to Central and South America. This fall migration of fish-eating and shore birds is one of the genuine wonders of the natural world but someone should have been monitoring it for decades and apparently IF they have the data never gets out to the public. We'll do this first fall migration official count when the birds peak in numbers before the first REAL cold frontal passage. Friends of Padre through the Ruth Parr Sparks Foundation is bankrolling the effort. In future years we can compare each new years numbers against this first count. ANOTHER ASPECT OF THIS IS THAT ONCE WE CAN ESTABLISH HOW IMPORTANT TO SCIENCE IN KEEPING UP WITH THE GENERAL STABILITY OF NUMEROUS SPECIES THIS COUNT IS IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING WE'LL REQUIRE CONTINUED PERMISSION TO CONTINUE DRIVING ON THE BEACH TO GATHER DATA FOR THIS AND OTHER PROJECTS. GET IT? Currently we have muddy water due to upwelling of deep, colder water coming out of Mexico. The birds won't be in high #s on the beach till we get our clear water back. For this one reason alone I humbly ask that anyone going far south let me know when the water gets clear again so I can resume scouting trips without wasting time and money running down there in muddy water.
Your Brother in the Sand, Capt. Billy

Capt., when you say "REAL" cold front passage, does that mean December?

No sir; that does not mean Dec. Mid Sept. to early Oct. usually. Blows like hell for 2 or 3 days and temps. drop. Thanks for the interest. Billy

Get your feeders out now. I've had hummers at the house all summer.

I love to watch the hummers when they start the migration South. Smith Point here in the Hoston-Galveston Area used to be a place to stay before the storm blew everthing away.

I always thought September is the best month for light winds and great surf fishing? Was planning another trip next month.

We spent august 10th to the 13th in mansfield. Water was crystal clear on the north side of the east cut, semi clear ( I could see the bottom) of the south side of the east cut. we ventured out to the jetties saturday and sunday and the water was clear enough to see bait passing 20-30 yards off the end, not a single piece of grass either! We didnt make it over to the south jetty, but the water looked real calm and clean on that side as well.
