The longer ropes offer more strech, better for yanking method, Yellow straps not bad for casual pullout. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

A strap's rating is for it's burst strength. The smaller, thinner straps are fine for towing on a smooth flat surface, but pulling a fullsize truck loaded with gear out of a sucking hole with a running start places a huge amount of stress on a strap. A 15,000-20,000 lb rating would be my bare minimum.
Most 4 bys have tow hooks up front, out back, the options are far fewer.
I have a hitch without the tow ball mounted on my truck. I can then use a D-ring shackle to attach the strap by running the pin through the ball mount hole.
You can also purchase a hitch with the D-ring permanently attached.
A pintle hook also makes a good mount.
Throwing the stap over a tow ball is not recommended because if the ball should break off, well now you have a possible missile.
One last thing, don't tie the strap on because you will NEVER get the knot out after your done. _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman

4" x 30' Pro-Comp recovery strap... 40,000lb breaking strength..
(I've blasted through a 2"x 20' before)
D-ring shackles, front hooks, Hitch mounted D-shackle
was a pricey strap, but I'not worried about it busting on me _________________ Joe |

Braided Nylon rope works best if trying to pull someone out. The more braided the better. 100ft usually gets you a good running start. The stretch and recoil works wonders. If you are just towing I think any strap will do. _________________ Life is Good |

Chains work best!
JK, I have a 6" x 60' strap thats pretty stout. Plus another 4" x 20' if needed.
I use this too.

My buddy uses a 4 inch wide strap. Used it 3 times last weekend to pull 3 different beach goers out . 2 young guys from Sinton, a couple of cute girls that were stuck by the condo near spj, and a bottomed out Ford at the fish pass jettys. A used 40,000 lb strap that these refinerys throw out is what my buddy uses. We put a dent in a local towing buisiness' pocket that night. _________________ I plead the fifth |

I keep 3 20' straps in the truck at all times. That way you can use what length you need without a bunch of extra strap to deal with.
Kennedy Wire and Rope will do you a good job. They will make what you want. |
