im just trying to figure out what yall think. i took my pad off the center console to get redone over at margy's. the work looks good but for a small 30ish" by 8ish" pad i was charged 85 plus tax. is that a normal price for this kind of thing or should i look elsewhere when it comes time to do my cooler pads? _________________ Chris Gonzales |

I would call around. Marine upholstry is just a type of material used. Any one who does the work can do it. Check around. I should get my wife to start making small stuff like cooler seats She sews great and has the equipment for it. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Margy's does great work, but I had her redo 5 cushions on my old Bayquest boat and I struggled to get her down to $500 + tax for all five. And that was for just plain old pleated gray(no new foam) and the bead edge. It seems like every time I've gotten pricing to redo the cushions on my boat from several places, I felt like I was being taken advantage of. Might check out Hinojosa Upholstery. I've HEARD they go great work for a reasonable price. But, I've never actually gotten an estimate from them.

I'm sure they do great work as well, but I got a quote for him to do my cushions with non-pleated, two colors(white/yellow), no new foam and no bead edge for 4 cushions(front of console seat, front of console back rest pad, leaning post front cushion and leaning post back cushion) on my boat and he told me $740. I told him thank you very much and went on my way. Not bad mouthing him, just giving you the numbers I was quoted. |

i guess the people that do this kind of work are really proud of thier work. i cant see the material alone going over 40 bucks on my particular pad. so that extra cost was the 1-2 hours it took to put it together??? thanks for the responses. _________________ Chris Gonzales |

I started doing Upholstery at the age of 12 with my grandfather...it is an art....ok boats not so much but it is not easy. The equipment is not cheap and the upkeep is like a boat some thing always needing repaired. You take them the boat ...they have to take it apart with out damaging anything. They then have to take apart the old cussions and you do it carefully because you have to make a patter out of it. Now we need to travel to get new fabric. Now the fun part cut sew and re install. All this takes time and they do this for a living and so they have to get paid enough on the jobs they get to keep the lights on. If as boat owners are always looking to get stuff cheap we will not have anyone local to take our boats to.....I just spent 300.00 today on a lift pump. Nothing about this boat is cheap so why try to undercut the locals that are willing to do the work here....some day you might find you will need to drag your boat to houston to get a seat re done.....I have a machine in the garage and will do my own here in the next few months because I can. Can you? _________________

I guess yellow is just more expensive. I had the similar to same work done except I have a flip flop backrest and the top of a 94qt cooler seat. $475. Got it the next day. All white no new foam and no bead edge. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

| I used the guy right off SPID and Carroll lane a few weeks ago. He recovered 6 Cushions with Marine vinyl and did a two tone grey and blue for $375. Took him about four days and they turned out great. My dad has used him in the past several times as well and always had good results. |

I hear ya and understand where you're coming from. And no, I don't have the skill, equipment, or talent to do this kind of work. I am very much a DIY guy and try to do as much as I can on my own. I tend to save a lot of money this way, but if it's beyond my skill level, I will take it to someone. And that someone will almost always be local(I believe in supporting local business). As soon as I find someone I'm comfortable doing business with for the price they're asking, I'll get it done. But, the pricing I got seemed high to me, so I moved on(I'm an amateur tightwad). Like I said...not bashing anyone, just stating the facts. |
