I attended the Port Aransas Boatman monthy meeting last night.Brent Casey reported Apache Oil has already removed 5 rigs and is in the process of removing 29 more rigs in the next 150 days. There are 112 more rigs scheduled to be removed within the year. They are within a 100 mile radius of Port Aransas. Most are in our area.If you fish offshore I urge you to take a stand and get involved.Call your congressman. _________________ Life is Good |

Don't they just cut them off and leave the remains? _________________ I am a pirate 200 years too late. |

when they take the old platforms down, they often use explosives to cut the legs. This will kill a lot of fish that are at the platform.
you have a double edged sword here.... you have a liability sitting out there, that may no longer be in use, you have environmental groups screaming about the evils of oil companies, and look at this removal as a victory, even though it creates a huge man made habitat.
Then, when they cut it down, they will kill hundreds, if not thousands of fish that are in the blast area.... sad deal. |

i think the only reason they take them down is when the well is not producing any more and when they do that they will go down and cement the hole then cut the platform i think its bs because they blow it up kill the fish and make it un fishable bc you have no idea where anything is atif they ar going to blow it up and leave it thier they could at least cut it up and pile it on the bottom it would be way better to fish _________________ IF I DID NOT HAVE BAD LUCK I WOULD NOT HAVE ANY LUCK AT ALL!! |

Well, yea. Once the well is no longer producing, what point is it to have the well/platform out there??? They sure weren't put out there for "fishing opportunities".
Yes, cutting them off at a certain level (-85 feet the last time I checked) does have benefits, but not all platforms are good candidates for that. Leaving them in place is a non-starter (liability, lighting, navigation aids, etc.), so forget that idea. And I'm not sure what calling your congressman is going to do here??? |

This whole thing seems crazy. In Florida they spent buku $$$$$$$$ putting stuff IN the ocean for artificial reefs, and it's been a huge boom to their economy because of the huge number of places that the party and charter boats have to go for great fishing!!!!
Feast your eyes on this and dream........................................ and this is JUST in one smale area of Florida!!!!!

| I went out to a rig about a week ago... Well it WAS a rig on my GPS i had fished many times. IT WAS GONE.... Completely. No sign of the rig. I know I did not change anything on my GPS. I can only assume it was cut down. Or maybe my GPS was malfunctioning. I just moved along to another rig which is where I shot my Cobia! Sucks if they chop all the rigs they are great for diving. They do however pose a threat to people under them when they are not maintained things fall off them as they deteriorate. The ones off bob hall are pretty scary to tie off to. |

I don't fish offshore much at all.I'm just telling y'all what's going to happen. There will be over 100 fishing spots removed and thousands of fish killed. There is a rigs to reef program that is not being utilized. _________________ Life is Good |

Many times they will layover a platform which then makes into a great & bigger, bottom fish habitat.
Sometimes they will remove the whole structure and ship it back to shore leaving a valve or old well head.
Just recently they pulled HammerHead and sunk it next to Southern Rock.
Either way, there will still be "fishing spots" if you have coordinates and a bottom machine (generally a rod & reel). Y'all will just have to learn how to anchor up effectively, drift, or be able to hold in place. Now this does mean there will be over 100 free & scuba diving (easy access) spots removed, which is a major bummer and concern. If we could find those 100 people willing to tie themselves to each separate platform for the greater cause of easy rig tie up....then we might have a fighting chance. _________________ It's a good day to be alive! |

Almost two years have past since I first posted (Sept 2010) about rig removal. There is no going back. What's gone is gone. It's funny how our Texas congressmen are just beginning to come on board. TPWD rigs to reef program is a joke. How many rigs have been converted to reefs? Of the rigs dismantled what are the percentages of removed and reefed? From the picture posted looks like more dead snapper than a recreational fisherman could wipe out in a season. _________________ Life is Good |

This is going to KILL the offshore sport fishing industry. Everything from bait to boat sales to hotel rooms. What little will be left will be squabbling about spots on the Liberty ships or Boatman's Reef.
Looks like I may be putting my boat up for sale. |

The companies agreed to remove their rigs to the bare bottom as a condition of being allowed to drill in the first place. That condition is a result of two concerns: safe navigation of surface ships and snag losses of trawls. The best compromise one can reasonably expect for rigs in the shrimp trawling zone is to condition their removal to a few specific permanent artificial reef sites.
Since cutting the rig legs with explosives will kill any fish in the surrounding area, maybe they should declare each kill site a limitless fishing zone for reef species for one week before each blast. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!
