Amazing with all the pc protection I have my e-mail was hacked from somewhere in Romania. What did I learn from this? Change your password more often. Now nothing was there for them to take or use but they were able to send mails to all of the addresses I have stored. I have seen this same thing happen to others. Just a simple heads up for those of you who might have a weak password if that really makes a difference mine was strong and was still compromised. All this time I thought Romania was a little POS country. Have a good one....IMS. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Yeah, it happens to most of us sooner or later. My son changed his 3 times and they still got in his email every time. He finally had to get ahold of yahoo to find out how to stop it. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it. |

Same thing happened to me two weeks ago. The problem is YAHOO. They admitted in a press release that a small number (500,000) of email accounts were hacked, but I think it was much much larger than they admit. _________________ E Pluribus Unum |

good answer. I honestly did not know that one was better than the other. How about some more input. My goal here is education and helping other dummies such as myself to protect themselves from hacking. It's going to happen sooner or later. I should know to change my password every now and then and to be sure it is a strong password. I know this is way off topic but we are all on the p/c from time to time and a little good information goes a long way. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| we are told at work to use a complex password consisting of 3 simple words. i cant remember how long it takes to crack a 3 word password but its something crazy like a trillion years. example: clock1time2twelve3 |

For regular e-mail, diversify your password, capitals, letters, numbers, & figures like &, $ or #. Length helps with diversity, but once you decide on a password, you can easily change it every 3 or 4 months jus be rearranging, and it will be very difficult to break.
And once you've done that, check it: http://www.passwordmeter.com/
For example:
Some people use the word "password" as their password. If you do that, it is very simple t crack and rates around 8% on a password checking service.
password = 8%
Password = 26%
Pass439word = 79%
Pass4398word = 94%
Pass4398word-$ = 100%
I would never use a simple word as any part of a password. Choose a set of words very familiar to you and add capitals, numbers and figures, and rearrange every 3 to 4 months and the chnce of your ever being hacked becomes nearly zero.
A google list of password checking sites:
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&gs_nf=1&cp=11&gs_id=16&xhr=t&q=password+checker&pf=p&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=password+ch&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=fe6f8da2d5e72e38&biw=1424&bih=724 _________________ Ray

Stan,
I experienced the same troubles you are having, and I was with yahoo. Yahoo told me to do this and do that to correct problem, but it never happened.
Interestingly, Romania was choice location for my hacker as well. Once hacked, I never got my email straight again as it affected even my conacts and the categories they were in.
I also did not know one email was better than another.
While it required a little more work and understanding on my part, I switched to gmail at the suggestions of others. By work and understanding, I mean it has many more options and things you can do.
It will also pull in your contacts from yahoo for you and you can even have email sent to your yahoo transferred over for several weeks to gmail while you let everyone know of change. It will also ask you if you would like to let your contacts know your email has changed.
A bit more to learn, but to date, I have had no hacking, no freezing on screen, once you get used to it, it is nice.
Hope this helps. |

It is not technically what you may have in your inbox that is dangerous about losing control of your email account. Remeber that most secure sites will send you an email with a link to reset your password if you select the "Forgot My Password" link. Some send a temporary password directly in email. Many sites even use your email as your login ID, or accept it on the "Forgot My Password" request page.
Be Safe,

I'm not real computer literate, but I understand your contact list is stored at Yahoo. In their press release, it indicated that 500,000 accounts had their contact list pirated. Therefore, I don't think that any password would have protected you. _________________ E Pluribus Unum |

| Watch for junk email and don't open anything that doesn't look right. Most "hacks" are from phishing scams that people responded too. Some are from malware so have a good antivirus and antimalware and you can get some good ones for free. |
