|
|
Fiddler crabs, of course! I live on the water and have fiddler crabs undermining my sidewalks and bulkhead. They make large burrows and are causing a lot of damage. I have tried everything I can think of and no success. The big ones are almost as big as a tennis ball and most are the size of golf balls. I NEED a solution. If I could catch them I could have a perpetual bait supply, but those buggers are REALLY fast. I have not been able to lure them into a typical crab trap setting in the yard, although I have frustrated a couple of coons and a skunk. The neighbors frown on gunfire, and no type of poison has seemed to work. The crabs stacked the mothballs back up neatly in the grass. Anybody out there have a solution to crabs?
I got one this morning!!!
I picked this one off at about 16 yards with my new pellet rifle. Nothing else seems to be working. So I got me a sniper pellet rifle and the games are on. Anyone interested in margaritas and stogeys on the back porch waiting for crabs!!!!!!! AAAARRRRRGGHH!!!!!!! Seriouly that was almost as much fun as picking off an AJ with my speargun. I looks like I only have about 200 to go. Remember now, I am 6'7" and 320 pounds so that little crab is bigger than he looks.

"Catch your own Crabs for Bait $5.00/doz"
Might work

Fire. Kill them with fire.

I like the fire idea best, but the biggest nest is directly under my boathouse, bummer. I would really enjoy a crab roast. These guys are seriously causing a lot of damage. One of the sidewalks leading to the bulkhead has dropped two inches at the bulkhead, this also sheared off the water line to the dock, located underneath the sidewalk. Now I get to trench a new line up the hill to the house. Definitely CRABWAR!!!
Mike, how about "Free Crabs", maybe the neighbors won't mind all the gunfire so much after they see that sign.
As far as the buried bucket idea goes, sounds good but I am a lazy man and have 185 foot of frontage, just hoping for something a little less labor intensive and not a possible mosquito pond, but definately might end up trying that if nothing else comes about. Thanks guys. _________________ Capt. Ross L. McElwee

I thought I read something on this forum that lighting flares and sticking them down the holes worked effectively. Yes??? _________________

| Dig a hole about 2 feet deep 4'x4' put two pieces of plywood leading into the pit use a flashlight at night and chase them into the plywood funnel where they fall into the pit and collect what you want. They make excellent sheepshead bait |

Lighter and ice pick...
Concrete
Put in mini terrariums and sell to tourists
Use for sheephead (as mentioned) or pomp bait
Personally I would not use any poison that close to water. _________________ "If we don't leave any, there won't be any."

You've got insurance. don't you!
Now you know what it's like to have friends. Ask a serious question, and what'da ya git..................
Seriously, I just go to the coast and don't live down there. I did not realize fiddler crabs could cause this type of problem. Do other species do anything like this?
