My wife and I went offshore for the her first time and my second with some friends. Just a quick word for those who don't think they'll need dramamine...it works...and should be taken by those who aint sure if they'll need it. Our poor double-over friend can tell you about what happens when you don't take it. Swells weren't too bad, but big enough. It rained on us a bit, which is really cool in open water. Storms threated, but thankfully kept the lightning a ways away.
After a long ride out to federal waters, we were ready to fish. Pulled up sow snapper after sow. One of the group caught the biggest, and man it was a nice fish. My wife got two of the bigger snapper as well. Caught several lane and vermillion. The captain had a nice 30 minute battle with what turned out to be a nice 6 to 7 foot shark, I think a bull but maybe some of yall know better. Wife also caught a smaller atlantic sharpnose, I think. I caught my share of snapper and hooked what I think was a king, but he got off. Another king we think hit some bait, but not hooked. A boat close to us got a 50 or so inch king while the shark battle was on. I rigged the wife up and what do you know, she pulls up a nice grouper. It was awesome seeing her catch, she was ecstatic. Our buddy managed a nice amberjack and a lesser one, but was heart-broken he had to send it back. I all but forgot to crack a cold one once we were catching, cuz all I could think about was the ling I had been dreaming of. It wasn't meant to be this time though.
We are all looking forward to the good eats, as its rare we catch cool fish (sorry, but whiting just weren't cuttin it). Had a great time with great people. I for one learned how to make rigs, so I may not need to buy premades anymore. I know they'll probably read this, so thanks again to great people.
Now for the moneyshots.
Take your dramamine man...

| Nice report. That smaller shark is a very pretty fish, almost looks like a glossy taxidermy mount. Nice colors. |

Nice report and some great catches for some good table fair.
Last time I was out with skies like that we ran up on a water spout and some cold rain. |

Forgot to mention baits. I wasn't sure what to buy and ended up with a smorgasboard, although I forgot the squid and we made a stop on the way out. We used squid, pogies, cigar minnows, mullet, and ribbonfish, all frozen. Also threw out some artificials and fishbites, just to see. The fishbites got hit hard by something that broke the line. Cigar minnows were used for chum, and they were being thrown out when that king was caught. I like to think we helped. Squid caught the biggest variety and sizes. Mullet caught some good sized snapper, but the pogies caught the biggest snapper and grouper. The ribbonfish were used for kings of course. _________________ Fortune favors the brave... |

Great Report, you should try high-speed verticale jigging. I promise that you will get hook'd. Especially when you feel the vicious strike of an 70lb+ reef donkey! _________________ "Our houses are protected by the good Lord and a gun And you might meet'em both if you show up here not welcome son" -Josh Thompson |

The pogies were definitely a top bait on this trip. Thanks for bringing them. And I don't mind at all if you post the shark battle pic. I'm to old to care how I look in photos. _________________ Live like you're dying |

The larger shark is a Sandbar, the smaller is a Silky. Those Silky's are beautiful sharks... and no, that is NOT what the BHP guys are catching and claiming as Silky's. _________________ -Oz |
