Well a couple of buddies and myself couldn't pass up the nice surf window so Saturday morning we loaded up and headed down to the 40's to run some baits. We set up camp and ran three nice size baits out to 300, 500, and 800 yards hoping for some monsters. As the evening drew close I decided to swap out the pomp/bait leader on my Saltist to another double drop leader, but one with some light gauge steel traces and 4/0 hooks on it. Cut a pony mullet in half baited and casted it just on this side of the second bar and forgot about it.
Several hours went by and about 10:30 pm it starts screaming for dear life. I run over, kill the clicker and tighten the drag. Line continues to fly off the reel and I proceeded to pretty much lock the star down. With about 50 yrds of line left I had to use both thumbs to slow and finally turn the fish. I would gain much of my line back, until the fish would see the bar and he would take off again. After about 45 minutes we see a nice size shark in the wade gut and my buddy Drew and I walk out and drag it up on the sand.
6'2" Bull, one of the funnest fights I have ever had.
Check out that tiny hook haha.
The big baits sat all night untouched. The next morning we fished for several hours and ended up with a big blue fish, and a 26" red. It was a great trip and I definitely tested the limits of that little saltist. Think I'm definitely going to be back down there next weekend. _________________ Blue Streak Fabrication - Manager / Fabricator
