The Island Moon newspaper reported in todays edition that the Whitewater wastewater treatment plant on Padre Island exceeded the state allowed standards of enterococcus bacteria by 10,246% in March of this year. In August of 2011, the allowed standards were exceeded by 27,087%. These two months were the exceptions as most months the standard was exceeded by only a few thousand percent. Apparently this problem has aroused the folks over at EPA Region 6 and they are now conducting a full compliance and review investiagtion of the citys wastewater treatment plants. Let's hope that something happens quickly to bring all of these plants into compliance ASAP. _________________ E Pluribus Unum |

Whenever they talk about an 'unacceptable' amount of fecal bacteria in the water, I always ask myself, "What is an ACCEPTABLE amout of fecal bacteria in the water?"

For the past few weeks I've noticed a crappy stinch on the west side of the JFK causeway as I drive through it. _________________ "Our houses are protected by the good Lord and a gun And you might meet'em both if you show up here not welcome son" -Josh Thompson |

so what happens when they go over the limit? A slap on the wrist? A fine? Is it different if you are 20% over or 12000% over the bacteria limit?
Sounds like the shining city by the sea doesn't take their sea so seriously. |

I went to the TCEQ site and looked at the plants history. Its known as the Whitecap Treatment plant. Recent compliance history is here.
http://www12.tceq.state.tx.us/crpub/index.cfm?fuseaction=iwr.novdetail&addn_id=706848222002065
I see no involvement from the EPA which does not surprise me since its the states responsibility with EPA oversight. They do show self reported violations in those months but they are labeled as moderate. They appear to be reviewed every month by the TCEQ. The history of the location is classified as Average. I can't find any current serious NOV's or anything else. They have had two complaints since 2007.
Also, be careful relying on the the NRDC for info. They have an agenda. |
