What's the world coming to when you have to give up your rod and reel to a robber?

I really think I would have just started whailing him with that rod with the reel end. That story just doesn't seem right.

You are your best protector. Police will get there after the fact. You are your best protector. You have a God given right to protect you and yours. Fish armed, I do.

The 6ft long stainless 5 prong gig I carry on my shoulder when I gig at night is enough to keep people at bay it appears. I fish alot after work and I cant have a gun on NASCC, so I fish with co-workers or carry a knife and my big gig. Ive knicknamed the gig "trident"

When someone is pointing a gun at you, you are better off giving them your stuff, than putting up a fight, this is how innocent people get killed every day, over something that could have been replaced. No doubt, if I had a gun on me, I would have gave the robber my pole and the minute the SOB turned sideways I would have shot him right in the face point blank. I can't stand a thief, especially one that uses a deadly weapon. Someone like that has no morals, and no value of life, so keep that in mind.

agreed on the first part best approach is to comply while smiling and being friendly
getting shot or shooting someone is something to avoid at all costs
lead poisoning may or may not be the answer, it is a tough call to make under stress (the law is most likely not going to be on your side if you shoot someone in the back)
at night keep your arms inside your silhouette to conceal what you are doing if you do decide to make a stand in a situation like this..
i think i would choose to go to roy's and get a knew rod
i dont think it's worth dying or killing someone over a fishing pole

He who shall not be mentioned: You have made it clear in a number of posts that you are armed the majority of the time. That is why this post of yours is so important - you clearly state that not using arms is the very best resolution -great observation and advice. That is not to say that there are not situations where the only resort is to shoot, but a situation like this (giving up a rod/reel versus shooting) isn't it. Smart post, smart advice without totally giving in to being a victim in all scenarios. Certainly gives credence to the idea that doing something hastely or too late are equally bad. Pick the time, the situation and the place.

Which is exactly why the thieves keep right on thieving. Guess how quickly the thieving might end if several thieves get blown away trying to rob someone on the beach!!! The State of Texas has given you the right to protect both your person and your possessions with deadly force. If people choose not to use this right then they have only themselves to blame when it gets worse - AND IT WILL. I am not sure how Corpus and the other beach cities are coping with reduced tourism from the down economy and the increased crime rates - not well I would guess. Hardly a week goes by when on this board alone there are not numerous reports of trucks being broken in to, kayaks and equipment being stolen off the top of cars or even from behind fenced yards. The only way I come to CC anymore is if I stay on the Naval Base and fish either from a boat launched there or in VERY PUBLIC PLACES. I don't even like to park at BHP at night.

Having it on you and knowing how and when to use it is the important part. If someone want something from me i'll do every thing i can to not have to use deadly force but if i fill i need to you can bet your but I'm going to. If some DA pulls a knife r gun on me that is going to be one of those time's if i have a chance.

Having it on you to where you can use it if you need to is a must. if its setting 20' away in the truck r boat its not going to do any one any good.

TRUST ME I LOST A VERY CLOSE FRIEND BECAUSE HIS WAS IN HIS TRUCK AND HE WAS SHOT DOWN TRYING TO RUN TO HIS TRUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to say he would have made it any way but at least he could have shot back and had that chance. He was shot while driving his tractor after running this guy off earlier in the day at his scrap yard. The guy came back and shot him on the tractor he jumped off and was running back trying to get to his truck and was shot in the back 4 times and once in the back of his head. Then the guy walked over a 100 yards where his helper was cutting up metal and shot him in the back of his head he never know what happened. So i'm not going to try and judge a guy. if we could do that my friend would still be alive.

I'm just saying that if someone is ate up with enough DA to pull a knife r gun on me for any reason and i get a chance to defend my self then i'm going to!!!!!! I'm not going to try judge r figure out at that time what some one has in mind to do. They have already when way to far. I agree that a rod n reel r far as that goes anything is worth dying over but the DA that pulled what ever on me most thinks it is. If i could tell the future then i would happy give up what ever they want to keep any thig bad from happening. BUT I'M NOT GOD SO I'LL LET HIM FIGURE WHAT THEY WHERE GOING TO DO IF I GET THAT CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I HOPE TO GOD I NEVER HAVE TO FIND OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To each there own I guess. I'd rather be armed to fight for me and mine but i'd rather avoid the death of him or me for a rod. Lets not forget that he asked for money but aettled for the rod. This guy walked up in the night, these guys were not prepared for what came about. Just like shark bait said a while back you must always be aware of who is around you. Someone walking up to your camp at night is most likely up to no good.
