Ok guys I have read so many "frustration threads" let's see if I can help a little. My experience fishing this brown stuff came from the seven years the Laguna was covered in it in the late '80s and '90s.
Here is what we found and is what patterns I use today. Soft plastics will do nothing but give you a day of casting practice ,unless your site fishing.
Topwaters did work for us then but only in the early spring like Feb, March and April provided the water temps were still in the low '70s.
Live bait was the best bet and finding trout was harder then because we just came off of a real bad freeze. It almost killed everything in the ULM.
Today I'm catching trout in the BT on live croaker fishing in 2 ft - 3 ft of water on the grass, moving from one area (not far) has been the key, We've been catching 3 - 5 fish and move to another area. Look for the cleanest water you can find, it all isn't blooming/dark brown. in some of the water in the backyard I can see sandholes. If you fishing croaker, then anchor up and fish them for about 15 min. if you don't get a bite then move to the next one by using you trolling motor.
The sandholes on the edge of the ICW can also hold fish. I often wondered if the BT is from the surface to the bottom in deeper water?
Because water salinity is different.
Oh yea.....look for bait like mullet jumping. They are still a good sign in the BT on the flats. (shallow)
The best thing I can tell you is if your not catching them the way you might have been when we had good water.......change what your doing.

Wow, Talk about an unselfish fisherman. It seems like a lot of folks "in the know" might have just taken this as an opportunity to make themselves look better while others struggle. One hell of a guy

After my boat broke yesterday (injector) I dropped my clients off at the marina and went back home, on 5 cyl. I needed to do something with the croaker I bought so I stopped along the ICW between the Bridge and the
development turn-off. I caught a limit fishing the edge of the ICW around 9:00a.
Then I took the boat for repair.....
They are still there guys.

GOod info mike. I'm guessing when the winds blowing like it has been steady for over a week, the BT is mixed top to bottom. But this summer when it calms down and the water stratifies more, it may be layered. I'll ask around and see if people are doing anymore water samples. |

Went out with my SIL yest in his PB and we found clear to green water over in Deadmans area. Got 3 keeper reds and 2 trout, fishing just a couple hrs in the eve.
Gulps worked as well as fishbites deep under a float.

| Speaking of the BT does that make it's way out into the gulf and is the reason behind all the murky water that's been hanging around lately? |
