Last weekend, in the ship channel a few miles from Port Aransas, I saw two kinds of fish school-feeding on the surface. One was a small silver fish, kind of like a school of pirahanas. I think these were pompano. The others were much larger, dark colored, and with a forked tail, sometimes clearing the water completely. Bonita supposedly make a giant splash while feeding, so I don't think it was bonita. Any ideas what these fish are, and how to catch them? They would not hit a topwater lure or a silver spoon.

Those are dolphins. Try I live 10 inch speckled trout with a piano wire leader, and hold on.

Kidding or no? Haha I'm so confused on these laws! But it may have been a school of ladyfish

Don't get caught up in this....all Specks have to be at least 15 inches to keep. Do not use for bait..it's illegal

nah I'm just playing with ya. Like the others said, most likely ladyfish and kings/smacks. Could have been bluefish too. All of them are fun to catch, and all but the ladyfish are good eating.

if they won't hit the spoon, keep on down sizing and use a flourocarbon leader. You might get bit off but sometimes they are very picky. Also try a gotcha lure or the smallest sized mannolure out there. Then again, I did all of the above on a school of bonita and still couldn't get a hit.

Bluefish. The damn things drive me nuts they are so picky. You can drag lure after lure thru the school and not get a single bump.

The only lure I've been successful with is a small freshwater white bass slab spoon I happened to have in the saltwater tacklebox by mistake. 1/4 oz and very tiny tied to a flouro leader.

I missed one and hooked one before it was gone. Crying or Very sad
