What's goin on CF! I have asked this question before but I can't find the thread on here about it! I have one of the red Abu Garcia 6600's and am having some issues with it! The part that goes across the reel when you reel it in is sticking on the left side! I have tried to clean it out but I don't want to take it apart because I wouldn't haves able to get it back together. I don't have the receipt anymore but I got it from academy maybe a year ago! Will they replace it or am I on my own with this one? If any of y'all know of someone who does reel repair near Austin, that would work too! Thank y'all in advance!

academy will probably replace it. i replaced a all star rod from probably 15 years ago. it sounds like you will need a new paw.

In my honest opinion, any reel a Person buys now a days is crap, no matter what brand it is.if it was a combo, you will not get much use out of it, personally I like to look for the older models of Garcia that were made in Sweden , if you like particular brand,and if the money is there,shop on Ebay, the only draw back is allot of those reels, the replacement parts might be hard to get a hold of, but as long a you take care and clean your gear you should be good

Zack, if the reel is an Abu Garcia 6600 BCX, you can expect very frequent breakdowns and malfunctions. I have two of them and have experienced your problem several times. First time I took one to a reputable repair shop the guys just laughed and said they don't even carry parts for that reel, they're not worth repairing. I have a bunch of Abu G. reels and the BCX really shouldn't have the AG label on it.

That being said, when the pawl and worm gear are working I kinda like them. They cast well and are fairly smooth. I recommend you fix it yourself. It's not hard to do. With a Google search it's easy to find the parts. On the Abu Garcia website you can download a schematic for that reel. The pawl is replaced by removing just one screw. To replace the worm gear you'll need to remove one side plate. Change both while you're doing it.

The 5000 and 6000 series are all easy to repair. Jay is right; use the schematic and repair it for just a couple of bucks, and as a bonus get to know your reel at the same time. I rebuild all my reels every few trips in the salt. I know my babies well, and they stay happy with frequent cleanings.

As stated before, it's a relatively easy repair. You need to replace the pawl and worm gear. Academy usually stocks these parts.
Start by visiting mike'sreelrepair.com. Use the links to pull up and/or print the schematic for your reel and get the part nos. for the pawl and worm gear. The schematic will also assist in reassembling the reel. Anther tip- take lots of photos as you disassemble the reel so if you have any trouble you can simply look back through your photos.
I live down the road in San Marcos and could do this repair in about 15 minutes. Let me know if I can help.
