This is my opinion and should only be taken as such.
I understand the nay sayers somewhat but I feel this is the kind of growth that most of us in CC and specifically the bluff and island need. You have two golf courses on the island struggling and although there is some growth, the island has been stagnet for years. While Schlitterbahn does bring crowds it also brings new stores, restaurants, and raises property values. Those crowds bring money to bolster our local economy. Personally i'd rather deal with the crowds and thriving businesses than to see our city as a ghost town and an eye sore. Some bad must come with the good but I say it is more than worth it. |

Fragile barrier island ecosystems are not appropriate places to develop the type of "mini river walk" complex that is proposed. This is not about advancing the city economically vs. remaining stagnant. It is about location and the fact that one man has got the city by the jewels. I think a Bass Pro downtown would have been a great place to start. What's wrong with the boardwalk proposed for the waterfront. North beach could be cleaned up and turned into a more tourist friendly part of the city. There are lots of (better, IMO) options that would also bolster the city's dismal finances that do not include getting screwed by Super Land Owner Guy. Also, what about this incentives package to lure the developers into building on the island? Sounds a lot like corporate welfare to me. If you want to build, fine. But do it with your own money, not ours. Why should the tax payers help these guys build a park that the citizens have shown overwhelmingly that they do not approve of. I know some folks seem to think it's a good idea, but from what I've heard/read, the majority is against this project. That should count for something. Corpus Christi's stagnant growth is the result of poor decision making in the past. It has nothing to do with the fact that we have been absent a water park all these years. Fix the streets, cleanup the parks/beaches in town, make tourist feel welcome and safe to enjoy the many things already available to them. A Shatterbahn on the island will not fix these things.
On a side note..........the Bluff does not need this "kind of growth". The Bluff needs it's roads fixed, it's school district overhauled, and to do away with a transfer fee that allows anyone to go to FBISD for the right price. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

i see it as good and bad...
the infastructure (roads and bridges) aren't gonna be able to handle the extra traffic, it's conjested as it is....look at Spring Break...
like anything new, it will be fun at first, then it will die off, happens all the time, even up here with new things in San Antonio...
what happens when the first cane comes in and wipes the park out or pretty much makes it useless, who cleans up the mess, will they rebuild or just leave it as such...
just a few thoughts. _________________ Trophy whitetail and exotic hunts on some of the finest ranches Texas has to offer, www.mcoutfitterstexas.com

I don't live on the Island, so my opinion isn't worth much, but what I find most amusing is the line that I keep hearing over and over again from the proponents:
"The canal/bridge set for Park Road 22 will be similar to the San Antonio RiverWalk experience, just on a smaller scale".
REALLY??
That's like handing a kid a couple of sparklers and a bottle rocket, and telling them; "Here's your 4th of July fireworks extravaganza, just on a smaller scale"..... |

| I agree on poor decision making from the past and that many other options seem good as well but this is on the table now. I would have loved bass pro downtown but thats gone. Every great thought or idea seems to come and go. This is more than a bass pro or a new super wally world, this brings more. Its an attraction, it draws people, it draws money. In living here my whole life I can only say that Whataburger field, Am. bank Center, and the Lexington are the ONLY major builds we've had for drawing tourist. We need more. Not saying it has to be this. Just tired of the ones that seem to fight every idea just because we need infrastructure work. |

I agree with Topdog 99% (I really agree with letting kids transfer to the Bluff for the right price).
We should make what we have better.
I remember the Dave Ramsey "Act Your Wage" Idea. We, as a city, need to act our wage so to speak.
We need to focus on improving the quality of life for everyone in Nueces County/Corpus Christi. And not only in economic terms.
However, I believe developing the T-Heads is an outstanding idea. Sprucing up the downtown area would be an outstanding investment and would pay off in a short amount of time for us. _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

no kidding. with the Destination Bayfront Park and amenities planned, if Bass Pro had moved into the old Coliseum, that would have been a serious shot in the arm for downtown.
we need to focus on repairing aging infrastructure (streets, water, drainage) and revitalizing existing areas (downtown, north beach as was mentioned by others) BEFORE we go building new things.
that's how we got in this mess to begin with, and the City and County will just be stretching budgets thinner and thinner.
HOWEVER, the flip side of the coin is that the Shatterbahn will be build in the TIFD, and should provide a ton of money for infrastructure out on the island within the TIFD zone (which includes maintenance and amenities for Packery Channel)
meanwhile, Laguna Shores from Mediterranean to Bluff Landing remains one of the worst roads in Texas, and will continue to be so.

I like driving down to the valley every now and then. I like to go to Bass pro and spend some money then spend some more in other places while I'm down there. Apparently Corpus didn't want me spending it here.
As for the water park....I don't go to waterparks anymore. I'm to busy spending my money down in the valley. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

bass pro hangs on for dear life here in SA....they are more of a "up north" store, not much in the way of saltwater other than either really cheap stuff (worse than magellan) or very high end...
i'll take Academy and Cabelas any day. _________________ Trophy whitetail and exotic hunts on some of the finest ranches Texas has to offer, www.mcoutfitterstexas.com

Since I live in SA and not the island I dont get a vote but if I did it would be no.
I dont hink that kind of development will bring any more visitors than the beach already does. What I can never figure out is how come Corpus / Padre Island has never built first class accomodations / restraunts etc... There are some nice places to stay but nothing compared to what i have stayed in at other places such as Kiawah Island, SC / numerous places in Florida etc... I am talking NICE resort style accomodations on the island surrounded by nice restraunts etc....
The BEST tourist attraction you guys have is the BEACH and IMO why go to a waterpark when you have the beach? |

How can we fix the damn roads we have no money.......we need some thing that will bring in new money.........everyone that has tried to build in this town they get run out of town.....if we dont bring in new money this town will continue this downward spiral till it is just a town with a port and a dirty beach. _________________

I think we need to hire some consultants to study the idea. |
