Sad Sad Bum bum ba bum!!!!

The sample came back as positive for the accessory pigment indicative of brown tide, although the cells appeared to be on the upper end of the size distribution for this species in the Laguna.

Because the sample was from a single point, cell count information is not all that informative, and a transect throughout the Laguna to get a handle on the range of cell counts is in order. But, the concentrations in that sample were up there, as evidence by the sorry visibility all along the lower 1/2 of the ULM.

That's the latest folks, so stay tuned. Sad

Thank You CS for posting the test results.
Are there any plans on going further south for samples (Front of Baffin)
I'm going south tomorrow and could get sample if someone wants them?

Thanks for the offer Capt.

A transect of the Laguna, from the JFK through Baffin, and into the Landcut is being planned now, and we ought to get a better handle on the extent of this particular bloom then.

So, enjoy your day south and hopefully you will find agreeable conditions and a few fish to go along with it.

The Brown Tide bloom in '89 lasted 7 years in Baffin and the Laguna.
We have had blooms since then but none have lasted more than 6 months and seem to disapate with the coming of cooler waters.
I will tell you one thing I have learned from observation over the years, BT doesn't kill fish but they don't like it. The bloom will destroy seagrass beds by cutting off the light.
As for our current bloom, it's been on the move from front of the Baffin Bay for about a month now despite what some people say and without any
current other than the wind current it may linger awhile.

Why don't you call Clem's or CosWay and ask about the drum bite. Those folks are very good about letting you know.

I fished alot during that 7 year stretch back in 89 and while it does have an overall impact on fishing it does not shut it down by any stretch. Tactics have to change and it seemed to scatter fish more than with clearer water but the quality of fishing was not reduced that dramatically in my opinon. I'm not a biologist so no idea what lasting effect it had on the fishery but still caught lot of fish even with the BT.

Lots of rattling corks and shrimp from what I recall back in the mid 90's. Going over the JFK Causeway it looked like "tea" in the Laguna.

Yep, other than the occasional spoon or jig for tailing Redfish when the tides fell out late summer it was all popping corks and shrimp. I got so used to it once the water cleared I hated fishing it because it was "too clear" for the longest time!!

Could be good business for local bait stands. I may even have to change up fishing tactics. I feel a mandatory fishing meeting coming on.
