Howdy!
Well, I live in SA and don't get to fish Saltwater nearly as much as I'd like to, so my next choice would be rivers/streams with ultralight tackle. Last Saturday I hit up me and my dad's old fishin' hole. Now I have a yak though and it opened up a lot more area to check out. I was fishing with a 5ft ultralight and 4lb test.
Started early with a hybrid hookup only about 8-10 feet from me and in about a foot of clear water. He took some drag and it was fun watching him come up, thrash his head, and dive back down. Well, I was fighting him and the swift current when he cut me off on a big rock. Looked to be a good keeper...who knows.
Worked my way up river, piddled around longer than I should have checking out all the new territory, before finally anchoring in a nice wide section with swift current along the West bank. Fished the edge of the current and got a hit and miss. Right after I got a hook-up but didn't set the hook...he spit it out... A little later another hook-up but wasn't ready with fish lipper/stringer/etc... While reaching behind me to get my bag the line went slack and I lost him... Got another hit, set the hook three times (out of frustration and trying not to lose another), and brought him in. As he got close I saw he was hooked on the membrane of his eye. Somehow managed to land and string him before the hooked pulled through. He was about 20in and 2.5lbs and put up a great fight on the light tackle... Oh, and he tasted real good too.

No, I was below the dam a ways. From what Pop's Place told me last week (they are North where the river feeds into the lake), they can't even see any water. No river or lake for them |

Were you fishing below the diversion dam? I noticed the San Antonio River below the Medina confluence was looking very clear about two weeks ago. I sure this rain we've been getting has it muddied up byt now.

MadDog: I was between the two dams.
ccfishincoach: he was pretty fat, and I opened his stomach and he didn't have a single thing in there.
BTW, silver spoon and all chrome tiny trap were what they wanted. Nothing else produced. |

It's also privately owned along all of diversion lake. No public access of any kind. Have to be quite wealthy or know someone who is to fish diversion lake between the two dams. These people even block off access where the public road crosses over diversion lake. |

I was on the river and can't speak about Diversion Lake. But, I spoke to the Sheriffs Dept. in Medina Co. and made sure I was not doing anything illegal (such as trespassing) by putting my kayak in at the river crossings; gave them specifics on where, when, how long, etc. Read up on Texas State Law about Navigable Rivers/Streams and Texas Transportation Codes for roads and bridges.
Those landowners are preventing us from accessing and using a public right of way (side of road, riverbed, or riverbanks); they are breaking the law when doing so or by harassing someone trying to use those areas.
I understand why landowners don't want people doing this, but I am a responsible outdoorsman. I follow the laws, respect the land and resources, and try to have little to no impact. If anything I usually end up picking up other peoples trash, discarded fishing line, bait containers, etc... Try to leave a place better than when I got there. |

I think I do know the law on this as I have been practicing law for over 32 years. I did not say you were doing anything illegal. The landowners are not breaking the law. They do not have to give you access across their private property even if the water is public. You can not trespass to get to public water.
I would not put too much faith in what the Sheriff's department tells you about civil law until they get their law degrees and pass the bar. They are considered not much more than shoe clerks practicing law by those of us actually in the profession.
Additionally if the property is "spanish land grant" property, as much of it is, then the state law on navigable waters does not apply and you do not have a right to go on the water even if it would normally be considered a "navigable" stream. If you will look at the crossing of old medina Dam Road on google earth you will see that the barricades and fencing along the side of the road has been done with full knowledge and cooperation of the County. |
