Warning: the following report contains a exciting fishing adventure do not read if you are at work or there is a lightning storm outside! A/T is not liable for injuries you receive from attempting to recreate this adventure...unless you catch then its totally my fault
Tried to change it up even if the results are about the same...
Launched around 12 with trout on the mind
My usual spots were occupied..
2 notes here:
1. Dont bring your boat up to me ask me where i catch my trout, and then tell me youve been studying my photos fishing the spots almost everyday...i trust too much i guess
2. When i launched my yak a boat pulled up to show off there catch. The guys pull out a drum in the 45" range. Im pretty confused by now. When i ask what your doing with a oversize illegal drum in your icechest you better have a better answer then "Because its a record Blackdrum/redfish hybrid" and when i tell you that its just a oversize blackdrum dont call me stupid and get a attitude with me and flick me off, because when the game warden tells you the same thing it going to be accompanied by a BIG ticket...
I paddled off fixing to call the game warden but saw there green truck pulling up to there truck at the ramp when they were loading there boat
....idiots...got what they deserved
ANYWAYS!
with my usual spots occupied i went exploring new areas...
Started out trolling looking for a trout bite or reds on the shoreline
spotted a back out the water, grabbed my rod
Cast...Twitch..DRAG!
Had a bit of a surprise when i got it to the yak
it was a drum! and a good one!
Didnt know where it fell size wise so i beached the yak and threw it on the big ugly ruler hoping it was a high slot for the monthlong tournament
YES! SUCCESS! It was a great fish to take for the monthlong!
Kept on paddling...the wind died and got glassy was casting plastics hitting nothing...then the wind shift...anchored up and hit more good drum in the upper slot....then i nailed another high upperslot...
i knew the drill had to take it to shore again and see if it was a tourny entry or oversize
hoping..hoping hoping...
AWESOME it was a little bigger!
At this point i had a heavy stringer limit of drum from 28.5" to 29"
If i was going to make a trip to corpus i wanted it to be where i could enter at least 2 fish so the search for a red/trout was on...
I needed to drift to find them but wind was bad and pulling the stringer i had would be a feat and a half
the solution!
Grabbed my stake out stick and tied off my stringer along the shoreline
off i go!
went about a quarter/half mile against wind anchored up and set my stuff up...
thought it would be a good place for flounder...BUT i dont know anythign about them so it was a shot in the dark..
grabbed my shimano with the clicker and tied a slip weight and threw a mud minnow on a hook so i could drag it while i drifted...
pulled anchor threw the drift sock and started casting..
hooked into a nice bull red but came off right at the yak SAD!
by this time im pretty much back at the shoreline by my stringer
started seeing fish scatter...thought it was the drum on the stringer until i got closer
something was chasing those baitfish right on top of the shoreline!
Cast...Twitch...Drag!...HEADSHAKE!
2 big headshakes and a flip then i get this solid trout to the yak!
It went 24.5 inches! Yeaaaaa!
my finger is blocking the measurement shot i took for kayak wars so ill have to grab a pic tomorrow of it, hopefully none of the fish shrink a lot before i can get them to a weighmaster
Didnt get any flounder...shocker hahahaha
threw the now really heavy stringer in the yak and started to paddle back
It was a GREAT! Day on the water and im starting to get a feel for every little inch of baffin bay. Its a good feeling when you can go explore new areas and still pull in quality fish.
Till next time yall..
Life is good

Congrats...those are some nice catches. So what kinda yak do you have AT because it seems you are able to troll and cover a lot of ground? I've been trying to talk the wife into an upgrade yak, but that's a work in progress. _________________ Fish On! |

I roll in a Tarpon 100....although it doesnt track very well and isnt great against wind or long distances....im a very fit person and it takes its toll on me end of the day....however it is very stable which i LOVE....i will be upgrading to a Jackson Cuda soon _________________

Ah I was thinking you might have had one of the pedal drive systems, but you just like to get your paddling workout. I saw those pics of bigd's new cuda and they definitely look sweet. Don't think the wife will let me drop that much on a yak tho _________________ Fish On! |
