Hi to All.
The fishing in this area coupled with the spring-like weather (minus the high winds) has been exceptional. I'm currently on the start of a 2 week vacation which will have me on the water for most of it trying to catch a trophy 30" inch trout.
So far in my endeavor the last 3 outings has yielded 17 trout over 20" with most of them between 21" and 24". My biggest trout was a 26" heavy fish caught today. I've also caught about 20 slot reds and 1 oversized at 28.5".
I plan to try Copano and Port Bay, and then down to the ULM/Baffin before it's time to go back to work.

Thanks, Guys!
@AT - I've been fishing for big trout more seriously with lures for about 4 years. I've caught around 15 to 20 fish between 26" and 28.5". I just don't know how many big fish reside up in the AP/Rockport area. My goal was to pull a 30" out of these waters, but as rare as a big fish is anywhere, up here I'm not sure if it's going to happen. I do fish the ULM a lot during the summer for reds. I think i need to start trout fishing down there more.... |

There are big girls all over the Texas Coast. No reason you can't catch a big trout in AP. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Well, I didn't catch the 30-inch trout but managed many solid fish and a much needed break from the daily grind. I also got to follow the fish as they transitioned to different structure and feeding patterns over the past 2 weeks.
The vacation started after a front blew through and the temperature began to warm. Redfish and better than average trout moved shallow to bask in the sun and to start their gorge. I even got to sight-cast to several quality trout which was awesome. The weather stayed pretty warm with only one real windy weak front that blew through.
I caught most of the fish early using slowly-twitched mirrodines and corkies, and flapping devils with a slow-stop cadence. The fish were caught drifting on mud/grass/shell flats, and wading mud/grass and mud/grass/shell shorelines.
The transition was in full effect this past week and by Wednesday the trout had moved to main-bay shorelines over sand and grass. With the high tides, the reds ventured in the back-lakes and on very shallow newly-flooded flats. The reds were caught using a fast-retrieved cankbait while trout were caught using corkies and soft plastics while employing a much faster cadence.
My totals over 10 days were as follows:
28 trout over 20" (6 between 25 and 26.5"),
64 slot reds,
2 oversized reds,
9 keeper flounder, and
2 hardheads (each on a corky; a first for me).
I fished Redfish and Port Bays.
No 30-inch trout but a very fun adventure. All trout over 20" and all but 6 slot reds released. I did keep 5 of the flounder
Hope this report helps in some way.... |

you need to get to the back reefs in Nueces bay. All of Feb. there have been big trout on the shell. |
