TPWD will be holding scoping meetings and taking online comments about a new state scientific area to protect seagrass in the Laguna Madre. It will be 15,500 acres and extend north and south of JFK.

No dates have been posted yet.

I can't copy/paste the whole release here but the link is:

Here's a map of the proposed area:

Wow, that's the entire backyard, and then some.

Would make a lot of areas off limits on low tides, except on plane.

It is important to remember though that chopping seagrass in the protected areas is legal.

Uprooting it is not.

I've got no problem with it. For some reason, I like to pole along real slow, catching fish or not.

Very suprising to me that this doesn't have a page 3 by now seeing how many of us are boaters! I understand and support preservation of our land so I guess I have to get educated on the obvious... Everyone has seen the Stop Pole and Troll Commercials so I want to know if you're in the middle of LM does one have to drift all the way to a crash channel before powering up? Who decides the fines and how would they police it? How long would the preservation zone last? Who decided that it needed protection and how did they come up with that! I always seem to find politics behind every action and I would hate to see this put in place because Feds were givng money and if it wasn't used then it would be lost or the entity that is supporting this zone wrote a grant to fund their project and bring in revenue,These are just a few of the questions I have. By no means have I formed a solid opinion SO I dont want anyone bashing me, I just need more info, I guess that's what the public discussions and online comments will be about!

I think people are absorbing and digesting the info at the moment. Smile

The map shows an access ramp at the NAS marina. I thought they closed that ramp down? Has it been rebuilt?

I don't know the answers really to most of your questions. These shouldn't be confused with no-prop zones though; your vessel can be under power but can not uproot sea grass. Enforcement will largely be made through Game Wardens. It's a Class C misdemeanor with fines to $500, as decided by a judge. I searched but couldn't find any data on enforcement in Redfish Bay, number of citations or revenue raised from citations.

The revenue from citations goes into the general revenue fund. If this comes to pass, I'd prefer to see revenue go into an actual dedicated restoration-based fund that could be supplemented by general funds. Restoration of the areas under protection may not be absolutely necessary due to natural regrowth but it could be used to fund projects like the Nueces Bay Marsh Restoration.

It would be worth asking if any additional Preferred Access Lanes (PAL's) are going to be considered.

Can anyone verify if this ramp is open or closed? if its closed I'll have it pulled off the map. We will also have signs up at packery as well. Jason Slocum

It also shows the one at the end of Caribbean which has been shut down for quite some time. As far as my feelings on making the backyard a seagrass sanctuary. I am gonna have to think about that.

Hey Jason.....you missed a ramp in the Padre Isle development. There is a ramp on the corner of Caravel and White Cap, there is also a ramp on the southside of White Cap at the end of Cartegena.

What do you mean you will also have "signs up at Packery as well".
Is this already a done deal, without any scoping meetings? Smile

Mike

I didn't know there was even two to confuse! I can see now why some of these guys have no problem with it. I thought it was ZERO as in no motor on! I feel less tense about this and may lead to OK' ing it!

A report or F/U on the Redfish Bay zoning would be interesting!

@ captain Mike,,,I saw a small jon boat being launched off at Red Dot during the summer, is this a make shift ramp, natural ramp or used to be boat ramp?

Good two know, ignorance is bliss!
