Denise Malan outdid herself today with profiles of the beach access organizations and their members. As usual, to reduce the load on Tyler's and Nick's message boards, only the links to her articles are provided below.

As for the LTTEs, I certainly agree the City Council need not waste our time and money promoting a development by putting flyers in franked utility bill envelopes when it could be attracting industries with substantial jobs. Voting as Andres Corona's LTTE suggests might send a signal to City Hall about letting the developer carry his own weight instead of taking away a tourist attraction we already have for free.

Not being a surfer, I hadn't seen the risks from the perspective David Michaelsen provides in his LTTE. Here's a surfing-related problem I had seen, though. Many surfers carry atop their vehicles or in a trailer more than one board for different rides, surf conditions, and accidents, just like I carry more than one pole and lots of different tackle on my rod rack and in my SUV when I drive the beach surf fishing. Imagine the temptation to thieves from leaving the extra board(s) or fishing gear unattended in a parking lot a quarter of a mile away. Trick or Treat!

Few jobs

In the election of Nov. 7 concerning Charter Amendment No. 1, I see signs promoting jobs. It is really about a few jobs. Why should residents settle with a minimum-wage-paying job with no medical, dental or 401K benefits?

The developer would be passing the burden of their well-being to the rest of us because of the refusal to pay better.

On Oct. 3, I spent one hour searching for jobs. I found that the city of Corpus Christi has 24 job openings, the Caller-Times advertised 99 job openings, and there were 35 local and 16 area jobs with careerbuilder.com.

These consist of aircraft mechanics, RN's, managers, and UPS handler drivers with pay in the $13 to $20 range. Why should we settle for a minimum- wage-paying job with no benefits? No to Charter Amendment No. 1 and Yes to Charter Amendment No. 2.

Andres L. Corona

Surfing risk

Denying vehicle access to the South Packery Channel jetty will set up a dangerous situation. Because the "tram" will have limited hours of operation, the local surfing community may opt to park at the north jetty and paddle the 300 feet across Packery Channel, instead of walking 1,700 feet for a dawn patrol or late evening surf sessions.

A young, inexperienced boy or girl may be hit by a powerboat in the channel. Days of good surf will also be times when a swell is in the channel. Also, the ebb and flood tides can create strong currents making that 300-foot paddle much longer. A boater may not see the paddling surfers as they lower behind a trough of a wave or just not see the surfers because of dim light or fog, or be distracted by some activity on the jetties (i.e. bikinis.)

I don't understand why this $1.5 billion development (which I support) doesn't put part of the public parking lot at the south jetty. Without an accessible south jetty parking lot, my vote is "No." Help prevent a terrible accident in the channel by demanding a public parking lot be constructed at the south jetty.

David Michaelsen

Read the articles and to me they still seemed biased towards snexy. I liked the LTTE's.
