|
|
I live just north of Austin in Leander and in my neighborhood, there is a large lake with a dam, and on the back side of the dam, there is a small retention pond. I have seen whats either a beaver, or nutrea rat in the water (actually, 3 different ones) but I cant tell what they are. Not big like a nutrea rat and dont have the big orange teeth that I can tell, but Ive never really heard of beavers down here. I guess I just thought they were more northern animals. I cant get close enough to get a pic. Thanks for the answers,
Zack! |

| we own some land in mason county with a creek that runs through our property. heard a beaver slap his tail one morning while deer hunting years ago. also, saw a recently "cut" down tree that had the beaver teeth marks all around it. oh, btw, the name of the creek is Beaver Creek |

Here on Spring Creek in Irion Co the beavers have returned! There were no beavers on this creek (trapped out MANY years ago) in my 50+ years. About five years ago, sign started appearing, a sighting and roadkill on a crossing. Now there is sign all over, Po'd landowners loosing trees, sightings are common (my jaw dropped when one swam under my kayak...they are bigger than I thought they were ). I have yet to see the beaver dams or lodges that I remember reading about growing up.
I don't know where they migrated from, but friends with land in Menard and Mason Counties have reported beavers for many years prior to their re-apppearance here. |

| I have trapped beavers for many years in N.C. as people do not take kindly to these eating machines when they take up residence on their property. Just because you may not see a dam and still see beaver is not uncommon. Every year the sow beaver will kick out the pups in the colony to make room for the new borns, thus leading tomore beaver venturing out into different territories. As for the critter you reffered to as a nutria but smaller; maybey a muskrat they are in the same familly but smaller and can play havick on a dam of a pond. |

| I live in Round Rock, just north of you. There are beaver in the creeks in my neighborhood - they do not always build dams if they don't need to, but they will build a lodge. You can tell them apart from a nutria by the flat tail. |
