Fished the surf Thursday and Friday. Surf report said that the waves would be knee high. HA, joke was on me! Got beat up pretty badly. Worse was Friday. Also got eaten alive by larval crabs. They were bad in some spots. Would make you itch so badly you couldn't stand it! We had to leave one spot where we were catching very large trout. Oh well, one must overcome some adversity to enjoy the absolutely huge trout that are in the surf. I have not seen such large average size before.
On Thursday we kept 9 trout. Only one was under 20" because it was deep hooked. Also landed a nice 22" red. Largest trout was 23". Ran out of bait still catching very large trout around noon and tried lures but only caught 18" dinks and a smack.
Friday kept 5 trout from 20 to 24" and one red that was 26".
Both days we released many trout that were under 20". Our freezers are stocked and we need to have a major family fish fry.
There were quite a few cow nose rays working the shallows. They did something I had never seen. A group of 5 or 6 would almost beach themselves, half in and half out of the water, eating coquinas at the water's edge. They would dig their faces into the sand to filter out the coquinas from the sand and then swim off. I see something new and enjoyable almost every time I go to the beach and I've been going for over 60 years.
We fish with free lined croaker at this time of year after we give arties a try earlier in the morning.

Friday's catch:
26" red and 24" trout:
