Started off drifting the Backyard for a couple of hours Friday evening. Boxed a 16" and 19" trout throwing soft plastics drifting grass.
Saturday morning decided to forego the neighborhood garage sale and went out to drift again. Scratched out five keeper trout to 20" on a variety of soft plastics and a 22" red on a DOA under a Cajun Thunder cork from 7-11 a.m. Again, most fish found over predominant grassbeds. Drifted an area with more sand than grass that has produced in the past but came up empty.
Late Sunday morning took my daughter and wife out (rare to get either one on the boat out in the bay, much less to fish). We all braved he windy conditions and I watched them throw plastics under corks. Long story short, my daughter, who's 11, said "I think I got one" and her words couldn't have been truer. We ended up playing Chinese Fire Drill on the boat, dealing with the motor, drift sock, three people on a 13' boat, and an uncooperative redfish. My daughter was about beat by the time we got it to the boat, giving her a wild 15 minutes of battle. She did it all by herself. Dad couldn't have been more proud. A 30" red that made for some good photos (I'll post later) before being released alive and well.
One thing I noticed this weekend, and I'm probably jinxing myself if not everyone else: where did all the skippies go? They were in full force a couple weeks ago. I tangled with one all weekend. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but I wouldn't have minded a few for the two ladies on the boat...
Edit:
Thanks for the kind words, all.
Here's Natalie with her C&R red:
And here's Saturday morning's catch:

Don't worry the skips are still out there. There is one swimming around with a bone spook jr. on the side of his body. Good deal on your daughter catching the red....NICE. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

There's also another one with a white mirrorlure hanging from its lips.
Loved reading about your daughter catching that red. I bet it was exciting for all. |

Maybe we should start a lost lure thread? Could return a lot of missing tackle to the proper owner or give the ultamte catcher braggin rights (a la "I got him on a glitter gulp after you couldn't on a silver spoon..ha.. ha..ha.."
But there again, there are no braggards on this board, only honest fishermen.
Congrads to the ladies! Some days you get all of the luck. |

There's a big skippie swimming around the Backyard with a white/chartreuse Bomber topwater in his jaw.
My nine year old nephew was upset that the fish swam off with his bait after his line snapped. Had his uncle not grabbed the line when the fish was close to the boat, his line probably wouldn't have broke. To deflect blame, I blamed the nasty old skipjack. |
