Has anyone fished around the wreck of the SS Worthington and the other two real close wrecks to it in the Lydia Ann Channel?? My bet is that it might be a magnet for Mangrove snapper, croakers, and whiting. Maybe trout too.

I would think it would be. Someone told me last year they were fishing somewhere in the Lydia Ann Channel and caught legal red snapper.

The SS Worthington Wreck is 447 feet long and appears to be sitting in 15-20 feet deep water. That's about as likely a place on the Lydia Ann Channel as anywhere. Snapper seem to like wrecks and this is a substantial wreck, especially for inshore waters. If it were a mile offshore from Packery Channel it would even be better.

There is another wrecked shrimp boat in Corpus Christi Bay that is several hundred yards off of the mouth of OSO Bay that looks interesting also. The guy who wrote Wade and Kayak Fishing The Coastal Bend talks about it in his book.

15 inches is the minimum length for Red Snapper - HOWEVER YOU MUST BE USING A CIRCLE HOOK FOR THE SNAPPER TO BE LEGAL. One might manage to get in trouble catching them in the Lydia Ann Channel where Red Snapper are not normally targeted. Here is a copy of the note from the TP&W Regs:

"iSpecial Regulation: Red snapper may be taken using pole and line, but it is unlawful to use any kind of hook other than a circle hook."

Limit is still 4 for Texas Waters.

I have fished that one, it's in about knee deep water, I did not catch anything, but it's on the edge of a gut, probably could be good at times.
You can park on CCBay side, and be carefull when climbing over all those rocks to get in, it's about waist / chest deep, then get's shallower and stays about knee to thigh deep till the boat,

Also didn't someone catch a nice ling/cobia in the Lydia Ann Channel last year?

I think I will fish it from my kayak - IF we ever get a calm(er) day when I am in Corpus.

So does that mean shooting them with a spear gun is illegal in Texas waters?

i interpret it as you can shoot them in state and fed waters. It never says MUST be taken with hook and line only.

"Built in 1920, the S. S. John Worthington was a 447 foot long tanker owned by Standard Oil. She made 20 voyages during the war before she was torpedoed off Brazil on May 27, 1943. The torpedo was fired by the German submarine U-154. The explosion blew a hole 30 feet by 10 feet in her side, buckled the deck and pushed fragments out the port side but only a few of the crew suffered minor injuries. Despite a hole the size of a house, the Worthington's crew sailed her all the way to Galveston where it was eventually determined that she was beyond repair.

After being stripped and partly salvaged, the ship was abandoned behind St Josephs Island where she eventually succumbed to the sea. The water depth at the shipwreck site is 25 feet, and the depth to the wrecks is 10 feet in place"

There are signs in the LA channel that will show you where the wreck is. It's between signs and across from the lighthouse.

There are mangroves on it, and I know of at least 2 ling caught off of it in the last few years. I think I heard about someone catching some small (undersized) grouper there.

Looks like it is very close to the middle of the channel, lots of boat traffic and sometimes a decent current. Couple that with lowsy visibility and it might be a dicey place to dive. Better you than me Gunbuyer Wink Laughing Laughing I still look forward to hearing what its like though.
