Ok.. need new tires.
2005 dodge 2500 heavy duty, diesel...4x4 (duh)
business good, but not getting new rims..
so stock rims 17" x 7.5.. originally had 245x70x17 rugged trail bfg, upsized to 265x70x17 rugged trail bfg..

looking at either bfg all terrain ko baja 285x70x17 E rated tires
have them on my chevy and love them and run great on low psi.

but have an option on some NITTO's

Dune Grappler 285x70x17 E rated.. would love to pinch in the 305's
or
Trail Grappler M/T 295x70x17 E rated

The big question is on the DUNE grappler.. dessert terrain designed tire. but comparied to the trail and the bfg is the the load copacity is
DUNE-- 3750lb vs TRail-- 4080lb and 3195lb on the BFG

I have driven the BFG as low as 5-10psi on a 2wheel drive to get through the 18mm, but wonder if the higher load cappacity of the tire could cause issues on the beach and damage the tire if i need to run tire psi low to beable to drive much easier.

any one run the Nitto trail or Dune and have input.. thanks in advance.

Higher load ratings are achieved through stiffer sidewalls. depending on type of construction used, they might, or might not, stand up to very low tire pressures for extended periods of time....However, if you can upgrade to taller tires with a wider footprint, perhaps the low pressure driving will rarely be required....I'd call the local 4x4 shop and pick their brains.

I run the Goodyear Duratracs,(285 x 16) have thick ribs on the sides & 3ply on the sides. Perform real well in the sand & havent been in a situation yet were Ive needed to air-down so dont know how well they they hold up with low pressure.

Just don't get an aggressive tread like mud grapplers. Mr. Ralph told me they used to use big balloon aircraft tires with no tread back in the day.

X2 with goodyear duratracks. Have them on my truck, great tire, smooth riding, quiet on the road, and most important in your case is they last long on heavy trucks. Been down the beach fishing, mud flats getting to duck blinds, and through mesquite brush hunting.

I run nitto terra grappler 285/70/17 on my 2500 chevy and have yet to be struck or need to air down. I get about 40,000- 50,000 miles out of them.

Ive had the dune grapplers on my 1500. To me they were too soft of rubber and chipped too much chunks out in a year time with only mild off roading. Now have bfg a/t...love them no complaints

Kelly safari tsr is what i have on my 2011 dodge 2500 cummins i love them so for great price at delta. I ran the nitto TG before had good luck with them as well. i never had good luck with the BFG's they got cut up to bad on all the gravel roads i drive on but they would probally work good in the sand.

On the beach, most stuck trucks are not bottomed out, so taller tires would not have helped. For sand, the wider the better, and the less tread the better.

On the Ford and Dodge diesel trucks, we have solid front axles which kills the ground clearance to under 8 inches. The Chevy has an independent front suspension which allows something like 11 inches of ground clearance. So on the Dodge and Ford, it is nice to get a little more ground clearance by using taller tires however even so, most stucks would not have been prevented by having taller tires.

And even though we have 4x4, the heavy diesel trucks still suck in the sand. They simply weigh too much and the sand often gives before moving the truck forward. Lighter 4x4's such as Jeeps, Toyotas, Samarais etc. will drive circles around us.

I would steer away from the mud tires and use an all terrain for the beach. BFG KO's or Nitto TG would be good picks. Nice foot print and a non-aggressive tread would be my preferance for the beach.

The Duratrac is a nice looking tire, but might dig in the sand when you are dealing with dry powder sand during drought conditions....but it does look like a hybrid A/T-M/T.

I run the Cooper ATR.

Great tire on the beach and have never had to air down to go anywhere I want too. Plus they ride well on pavement.

Most important, they are the last American Made AT tire you can buy.

thanks for the input

well, I am turning against the NITTO's.. not because they are bad tires.. but they are soft and dont get much miles out of them.. the dunes are suppost to be AWESOME IN THE sand.. but only 30k driving gently is not worth the added expense.
ran into a guy on the King Ranch running Nitto trail.. he loves them but already half way through them at 17k..
When I do run the deer lease it is mesquite and my old BFG's KO's lasted like forever on my 1500.. so need something strong for the dodge 2500. I am not familiar with the Goodyear Duratracks, but will look into them..

and yes, with out buying new rims, I am trying to max my height and width on the tires. I usually run my tires at 80psi on the road and drop them significantly on the beach.. solid axles on the dodge will knock your fillings out of your teeth and make your beer flat in 5 minutes.. ooh they dont last that long on a hot day...
I dont drink and drive.. it is the mrs that cant find the smooth road Twisted Evil

as for the coopers, one of my former employees was suppose to hook me up, but, well he is so full of bs guess thats why he is an ex-employee..
