I went fishing last Friday, was in a hurry when I got home and just threw everything in garage.

Forgot to empty the ice chest of dead mullet, shrimp, coke cans and trash.

Opened the ice chest on Wednesday and wow I had created new forms of life. The box was too scummy to clean out.

Another Ice chest bites the dust.

So how many ice chest you gone thru, due to stupidity.

2 for me.

Bleach first and then Vanilla extract. The Mexican extract. That and a dash of purple fabuloso ought to do the trick. Ask Skipper!

Now my method won't do much for the week-old dead mullet, shrimp, coke cans and trash stew, Shocked but this does allow me to keep all of my ice chests in the garage without any complaints from Mama. Cool

After every use, a decent sprinkle of DRY Idea powder clothes detergent, and scrub them inside and out.

Ever wonder why your hands feel so slick after you mess with dry clothes detergent? It denatures proteins well, and as such, will knock the fish-smell right out!

I have "ruined" numerous coolers over the years, but since I'm so cheap I go w/ the bleach method and salvage them.

Ditto that. I've screwed up a few times and forgotten fish that were in my ice chests and/or livewell!!!!!!!!!! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

I poured a whole bottle of bleach in there with what was left. Next day everything was dissolved and white with almost no smell.

If any of you used to go to the Flagship pier before 2002 you probably met a man named Jim. Jim was 90 years old when I met him and still fishing strong. He was kind enough to let me learn how to cast his Newells and taught me a lot about fishing from a pier. What does this have to do with ice chests you might ask? Well, Jim was a connoisseur of gafftop, and being so he liked to have plenty of squid on hand and really didn't care where he kept his spoils of the day.

One day Jim offered to let me have a Coke from his cooler. It turns out Jim hadn't cleaned his cooler in probably fifty years.
That was the nastiest squid tasting gafftop slimy Coke I've ever had. I still appreciated Jim for teaching me so much, but NEVER took another Coke from him. I let him have some of mine.

scrub it down with bleach and soap then toss a couple cut up apples in it for a day or so to get rid of the smell. can also use any acidic fruit but i prefer the apple smell

Maybe you were fortunate to have that happen to you now, opposed to July or August. The memory should stay fresh at least through the summer. Very Happy

When I was about 19 my mother woke me up one Monday morning to, "Hey, some thing stinks in the car". I replied " The rabbits." While jumping out of bed. Some friends of mine and I went rabbit huntin that weekend, in Mathis and Benavidez. Well the 3 rabbits we shot in Mathis stayed in the trunk till Monday morning. Luckily our little mazda had a drain plug in the bottom of the trunk. I'm gaggin just thinking about it.lol

Left a 20" sheepy in a smaller cooler once, and forgot it out back. When I opened it, wow that was the foulest smell. Amazing what a week in the hot south Texas sun will do to things.

I quickly closed it fighting back the urge to vomit, and carried it around front for tomorrow's trash pick-up. In the morning I hear the garbage truck pull up and squeek loudly to its stop, and hear the guy yell to the driver, "Hey check it out man!" because it was a brand new cooler on its first trip out and I hadn't even taken the stickers off it.

The next thing I hear is "Oh good god!" and the sound of a barfing garbageman. Shocked Yes, he pucked all over the street right there after he opened it up to take a look. Laughing That's how ripe that sheepy got. So bad I made a garbageman barf. Twisted Evil
