We had to depart with Pup today, our beautiful Lab of 13 years 22 days. She was a great dog who although definitely NOT a gun dog, was as friendly and sweet as the day is long with not a mean bone in her body.
Over the years she developed all kinds of allergies, then a staff infection under her chin, then leaky gut syndrome from the damn heavy antibiotics use to cure the staff, followed by years of searching for a remedy and the right food. We finally found both but by then she'd also developed a form of canine Alzheimers and seizures, and then the treatment for those turned her into half or less of her former self. Finally, her brain was so compromised by the the last two that we had to let her go.
Those of you who REALLY love your dogs as I do know how I feel right now.................................... I just had to share these thoughts with you. _________________ Dave

Sorry for your loss, they become part of the family. We had to put one down about three years ago and my wife wouldn't have another for about a year. |

I know how you feel. It is like losing a part of your family. Just remember you gave her a great place to live and you cared about her.. that is more than most dogs get... Hang in there.... _________________

It's been a few years, but the passing of our old boxer three years ago Christmas was rough. I cried like a baby at the vet, and held her til she moved on to what must be a better place. If you have not seen this, this is where she is now...just waiting ...
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... |

Thanks so much guys.................... I really appreciate your thoughts, especially the last, and I for one surely do hope that such a place exists in the hereafter.
I too had her laying in my lap when the Vet did his thing, with my wife petting her while we both told her that we loved her and to just let go, while of course sobbing like one can't control when a loved family member passes on.
The last time we had to do this was with my old pooch Pepper. At that time she was almost 15 and I was only 43, which means that she was with me for close to 35% of my life, and she went everywhere and did everything with me. I couldn't face the vet and the needle and my lovely wife took her instead. I still feel the guilt from that and am SO glad that I was there for both of them this time...................................... _________________ Dave

Bummer. That's the worst thing about dogs - they don't live as long as us.
Just know that you treated her right, cry like a baby, and name the next one after her.
That's my philosophy anyway. |

Y'all are a great group of folks. The only one on this board whom I've ever met is Capt mike, but I feel like I'm talking with many friends here. _________________ Dave

Hang in there buddy. It sucks big time to lose a good dog. This year we had to put down a german shepherd that was born on my bed back in '97. The morning we put him down, I left work and called my wife but was so upset she couldn't even understand me. You'll be okay. Get another dog soon though for sure! _________________ Fish hard. Yep LLBB, I feel your thoughts man.
It's amazing how our animals communicate with us and us with them.
A wonderful thing. Dang, I still miss Tiddley Winks, the best English Bulldog a kid could have ever grown up with. Paint me lucky.
When there is loss,
It's like big wave that goes over your head,
And you are out past the third sandbar.
Take a breath, let it pass over, as you sink.
Push off the sand below with your feet,
And then catch the next wave.
Ride it and the next to the shore.
When you get to the beach you will be calm and glad,
As you walk around and think happilly,
Yep, that was a heck of a dog.
Now go sew those sails and keep your head up.

We lost our Boxer a number of years ago and I still miss him. We still have dogs and we love them all but none have taken the place of Chief. He was one in a million. I know just how you feel. I still go to his grave and talk to him. Sounds dumb I know but it makes me feel better. _________________ Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggie" until you can find a rock.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.
I've had to put down my old dog & my cat this year, it hurts. They both lived to be 15 years old & were amazing animals. |
