While we are on the subject of sting rays, let me ask another question. A few weeks ago I was fishing at Pt Mansfield. We always see a lot of them there. As long as you shuffle your feet there are rarely any problems. Most of the hits are from something unusual happening. Almost all rays that we see are either already swimming, or they swim off once they see you.
I saw a pretty good sized one, maybe 15 inches across, swimming out in front of and then turned to swim towards me. Not unusual, they often do that and then when they see you they swim off. This one was different. He settled in the sand approx 6 feet in front of me in knee deep water, facing towards me, and then lifted his tail and pointed it straight at me and didn't move, just held it there. Anyone ever seen that before?

I haven't had one lift his tail but the stand off yes. That is when I decided to get a kayak. I had like 4 encounters on this one wade that was 1 too many.
I still wade but less walking now and more paddling. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

| I haven't seen them raise the tail but I have noticed in August for some reason they collect on the wade gut in numbers and sometimes will not budge unless you poke them with your rod tip regardless of how much you try to shuffle. |

They must be thick right now, we waded this weekend and the last few weekends in and around the badlands area and they are everywhere in the knee deep water. Better have a good pair of sunglasses because I almost stepped on some or pushed a few around when shuffling through. If you are a QUEIT - STEALTHY wader, they might not even here you. If I wouldnt have seem them I would have be done-so..
On ebay you can get those EVERLAST boots for stingrays around 25.00.. I just bought 4 pair all in diffrent sizes for my buddys that love to fish but always forget there gear when we leave the dock. |

I have the old time Predator boots. I really like them. I don't worry much with them on, although I still shuffle and look around. I just wondered if anyone had seen this really aggressive move with the tail thing. _________________ A flute without holes, is not a flute. A donut without a hole, is a Danish. |

Ive seen it in the first gut in the surf,Around a month after i got hit from one and i tell you it stopeed me dead in my tracks and made me do an about face. Not a pretty site from murky water at three feet. Like you said tail in the air. judging from the thickness in size of the tail it was a monster and i seen some over 160 plus. _________________ ''ONE LAST CAST''

| Last year while wade fishing the backside of San Jose Island, we saw what looked like a porcupine quill sticking out of the water right outside of a little drain off a flat. It looked just like a full sized quill sticking up just like it would if you were bream fishing somewhere in fresh water. My first thought was who would fish with a quill in salt water, to light to cast. We walked towards it and when we got about 6 feet away we could see it was the barb on a huge ray (for the bay). Three feet across at least and it seemed to be waiting outside this small draw for some food. This ray also had its tail up in a strange position but it was facing away from us. I would hate to think what that barb would feel like. I also don't think I've seen a set of boots that would stop one of these on a hard hit. The barb was 6 to 8 inches long. |
