Ran down last night to check on the house boat and see if there was any storm damage from Wednesdays 80 MPH wind gust. All was in good order and we found no damage at our boat or any of the others cabins in our area. Actually, there was no sign of any wind damage to any of the cabins south of bird Island.
Being we were there we spent the night with plans of returning at first light. Winds were light with a very small amount of tidal movement. Almost no bait under the lights however, there were tons of fish that were very picky about what they would hit. I’ve included some pictures from under the lights. The green light is on the front deck and the brown light is on the back deck. Around midnight we had several really big trout show up under the dinks but they wouldn’t take anything. One of the bigger trout started following the smaller trout every time one was hooked. Justin started working a fly rod in behind Cathy when she hooked a small trout and eventually this paid off. A really big trout in the 30 + range came in and nailed the fly. The fish spite the hook and a short time later returned for a second hookup. This time it busted off and took the fly with it. The big trout returns about an hour later and we can see the fly hanging out of the corner of its mouth. By this time Justin has went to bed and the big trout hangs around for over an hour “tormenting” Cathy. Dink after Dink, the big trout follows them in but will not hit anything Cathy offers. As luck has it Cathy catches a dink and holds it in the water just a few feet off the deck. All at once the dink comes off and her 3-inch Berkley Gulp is dangling right in the face of this monster trout. The big trout inhauls the gulp and a good fight follows. After a whole lot of screaming, “to make sure everyone is awake”, Cathy lands a 31 ½”, 9 pound trout.

HAHAHA, great stuff! Losing those bites and watching that monster mock you must have been complete and utter torture! I felt the pain and frustration reading the report. Congrats for finally tricking her into taking the hook. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |
