Had fishing plans with my bud for a few days, and I called him this morning at 7am to see if he still wanted to brave the weather. We both agreed that although it was calling for 20 mph winds, cold weather, and 100% chance of rain, it felt REALLY fishy out, so we decided to fish.
Got on the water at 8:30, after pickin up shrimp at Clems. Guy at the counter looked at me like I was a lil nuts because I almost forgot my bait at the counter, plus I had a kayak on my car when he said they were expecting storms. As forcasted, it was nasty out, but the right kind of nasty.
First spot, first cast, 16 inch trout. Drifted south quite a bit, casting a superspook jr while freelining shirmp. Then....BAM!! Looked like a my topwater got blasted with a depth charge.
Drag starts screaming, and Im on a Texas sleigh ride. After about 10 minutes, I finally catch up to her, and its a moster trout. I didn't have my net, and no leader, so without grabbing the 6hooked lure, I used my feet to lift her into the yak.
Put her up to the tape, 31 inches, my biggest to date, fat too. Removed the hook, revived her for a minute or two, and as I promised last time I got a big trout, I released her healthy back into the soup.
Slow for a bit after that, so we relocated back to the the spot I showed pics of the other day. Here we got nada on the lures but 5-6 reds between 15-19 inches, few dink trout, and my bud got a fat 26" red which we kept for the grill.
All in all, crappy weather, but a great morning, and a lesson...persistence pays off.

Dang boy. No background pics?
I have a rule about not allowing any liberal college kids on my boat but damn boy you got some serious mojo! Congrats to you. One hell of an accomplishment..
And jk about the liberal thing. Many of my bio major buddies are lefties. They just know to not talk about it or they swim back. |
