My mother in law is a fly fisherwoman up in Colorado. I would like to purchase a reel and rod for her but have no clue about fly fishing. Could anyone recommend a size of reel and or rod wt? She mainly fishes for rainbow trout and the like. Any advice and or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

8 1/2 to 9 ft rod 5wt. is ideal for most situations in Colorado. I have two and they have worked well for me. Her casting technique and style dictate the flex so you may have to consult with her to match a rod to her casting ability.

that's about right. also, those brookies and 'bows up there aren't that big, so you could probably get away with a 8' 4-wt.

I have a 9', 5wt I use in the streams and lakes of New Mexico. It works fine on everything I catch there. If the streams she fishes are tight with a lot of vegetation that would hinder casting then going smaller would be the thing to do. I fished a # of rivers in Colo. and veg. usually is not a problem.
