|
|
With the weather conditions forecasted for this week and weekend, does anyone think we will see another fish kill? Does anyone remember the last fish kill here in Corpus and how long did the low temps last? The weatherman is prediciting very cold temps Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Does anyone have any contacts with the TPW and have heard if there is a major fish kill how long will they BAN fishing? You know where the fish will be this weekend.........

If your prediction is right they will be floating on top. |

I hope no one is planning to go out this weekend and plan to net fish that are floating. If you get caught I understand it will be a hefty fine.

Check this out: http://www.intellicast.com/Local/Weather.aspx?location=USAR0336
What we get y'all get, only a day or two later and a LITTLE warmer!!!
It's 27 degrees out there right now and supposed to drop to 20 tonight. This is a COLD air mass y'all! The only thing that may save you is that it's not coming in on 40 mph north winds that cause mixing and evaporative cooling. That would REALLY make the water temp drop fast!!!.
I know this: The deep holes (ship channel) should be stacked up with some fish! _________________ Dave

| Wasn't the last major freeze/fish kill the one in 89?? Before that it was 83 i believe. Red tide, and now a freeze, may be slow fishing for a couple of years. I know after the freeze in 89, fishing was tough for a year or 2 afterwards. |

Weren't they also allowing people to net fish because they would go to waste anyway? _________________ Dave

yeah, and then have the kids pull it in
uhm.. does that work..

| I have caught red fish in the surf in Feb when the wind was hard from the North. A good fire and 1/2 jug of tequila and you would think it was November. L |

Snake, if f I see pictures of you and 10 other guys with some glazed-over bloated looking 30+ inch trout next week, I am going to be a little suspicious...
On a serious note, im with you DBE, I am getting a little concerned. How bad was it after the last freeze. I heard it was tough. If I decide to commit to living in Corpus for another 4 years, and then the fishing takes a serious hit, I am going to be one grumpy dude. Lets cross our fingers... _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

| For the first couple of years following the freeze it was tough, but picked back up nicely. I was a youngster then, but still remember LoL, and my old man brings it up all the time. I saw pics of numerous 30" plus trout washed up in the land cut, and remember reports of 36" ones found.. Mother nature takes it course for a reason though, not much we can do to stop that. just have to sit back and hope for the best.. |

Seriously guys come on!
No need to run to Mexico to stay warm. The forecast calls for the lowest to be around 33.
Fish will dive deep and stay warm. Yes there will be some wind which makes it colder but the fish are not dumb, that’s why it is called fishing and not catching!!
No need to Panic about a fish kill if there are some dead one floating it will probably be bait fish in the flats.
If you brave the cold just fish deep (Quarantine, ship channels, pure oil channel, any deep hole.....)
CHINS UP!!!! GET READY FOR THE BIG UGLY TO START MOVING!!!
KEEP ON FISHING

Sambo has a point on the upcoming cold snap. Based on the forecast map from this morning, the temps should not be in the low 20's along the coast.
http://www.srh.weather.gov/images/fxc/crp/long.png
That was the range of temps that caused the BIG freeze of '89.
Another good point we have going for us now is the bay temps are already low. It's those sudden arctic blasts that come on the heels of a warm period that makes for the huge cold-kills. I remember being in shorts and it being windy as-all-can-be the week before Christmas '89. |

| I remember the fish kill back in the 80's. Mike Yurias was on Channel 3 for the fishing tip of the week telling people to grab a net and go fishing. He said the only thing to watch out for was to make sure they were still moving somewhat indicating not completely dead but stunned. Anyone remember this. I remember my dad looking at me like I was a new artificial lure that he could wait to send out to the fish. I ended up looking like the Michelin man with waders on breaking through the ice close to shore to get to the floating fish in the Oso. |
