what do you guys think about a 1988 dargel 170 scout with a 90 hp johnson? I'm getting the motor checked out in the morning and then to the lake for a test ride. The hull seems to be in great shape. I'm gonna pay $4000 for the boat.

I suggest you have a Condition and Valuation survey. There can be lots of issues that are undetectable by normal visual inspections. If you need a referral just send me PM.

Good luck.

Good advice.....................and that sounds steep to me for a 1988 "anyboat" with a 90 HP outboard!

By "anyboat" I was of course meaning any boat in that size range.

Yea,4K sounds like a lot for that old of a boat,but.................
to each his own.

I suggest you take a digital camera with you and stick it in and under everywhere you can, look over real good and then "dicker"

good luck

I had the motor checked out today and will need some work including new throttle and shifter cables, complete water pump, some gaskets replaced, resealing the lower unit, new plugs, after that it will be dependable motor. But having 5 days to think about it the price is starting to bother me. He originally wanted 4950. The boat really doesn't have any extras and gps. Thanks for all of your feedback, it is making me have second thoughts about buying the boat.

That's very smart on your part! Cool Just because you spend the money to get everything fixed that needs it on the motor doesn't mean that something ELSE won't pop up not far down the pike.

I must say that with the fuel economy of the new outboards out there and the price of fuel, old outboards are turning into less and less of a bargain. Some of the older outboards were junk the day that they left the factory, and they don't get any better with age and use!!!! Shocked Embarassed Crying or Very sad

As far as reliabilty, those 90 hp johnsons and evinrudes from the 80's were the most reliable of the crossflow style v4's that OMC offered. They did not have tuned exhaust like the larger ones, that tuned exhaust is JUNK!!. What shape is the boat itself in?? Is the floor soft at all? Have a jackplate? $4000 wouldn't be bad if it was ready to go. Even still I would plan on replacing the water pump plugs, and lower unit oil regardless. Run a compression test on that engine too, you want no more than 10 lbs deviation from cylinder to cylinder. I recently (May) bought an 88 Majek 18' RFL, had a Yamaha 115 on it. Trailer was junk, the bow deck was soft, all cables trashed, motor had a cracked lower unit, no extras at all and paid $2000 for it.. Just gives you something to compare the price too. Ended up stripping it completly and am doing raised deck, new bow, newer 120 Johnson Looper, leaning post, stands, all the goodies LoL figure I'll be in it about $6000 when its all said and done.

old dargels bring money. I paid 4000 for mine and it needed a ton of work and it was 2 years older. If the deck is SOLID and the paint is good its worth 4000. I have over 15,000 in mine now but its pretty much perfect with the exeption of the older outboard.

That's the boat I had before I got my new Skout 210. Good choice but it does seem a little steep if it's not ready to go. Mine was 10 years newer and ready to fish and I sold it for 6K.

Way to much for a boat that old. Maybe 1800 or so .. How is the trailer?

sorry guys but if the boat is solid it is worth that much. I own one and I looked and researched for years. Only way you will find one for 1800 is if its a bare hull or a hull with a totally trashed deck. My buddy just bought one for 2000 and it was trashed it needed a total overall and that was the best deal he could find. These boats are very highly sought after if you like fishing the skinny waters we all love so much.

Good shallow running boat, but come Spring you'll need to buy a mouth piece.
