Moved here about a year ago. Loving it - fishing PINS surf and shallow water on back side of the Island(s) BUT:

Had the brakes redone on my truck yesterday and I took a peek underneath. I've been extremely diligent in trying to high pressure rinse after every trip, undercarriage, motor, wheels, etc, etc but the saltwater is still causing corrosion after just a year. What do you "learned ones" have for advice to mitigate the damage done, prevent it from getting worse????

Thanks, appreciate your help. Tight lines!!

buy "sacrificial" vehicles for the beach, not your every day driver.

I took my truck to Absolute Detail now located off of everhart near staples and for 100 bucks they did an acid wash on the undercarriage and sprayed an undercoating. for 40 bucks once a year i can get it touched up.
I had to replace my brakes calipers and rotors quicker than usual.

Not to get too far removed from your question as far as what you already drive: buy Japanese. Japan is SURROUNDED by salt water, they have decades of dealing with that fact and vehicles. My Nissan Frontier is a 98 with 170,000 miles on it. I had it down there 3 times for week long stays, fishing everyday and using the launching ramps too, driving on PINS. Zero rust or corrosion is visible anywhere. Wink

Also, is it's s deal breaker for you. Just because it's "Japanese" does NOT mean that it's made in Japan. Tons of Japanese vehicles are made right here in the USA, providing jobs to USA citizens.

I'm with porkfetus. Buy an old beater and don't worry about it. My choice would be an early 90's 4Runner. You can totally submerge that engine, dry off the distributor cap and it starts right back up. Wish I didn't know that information first hand, but it's true.

I would get an undercoating. I got mine from Z-Tech and they charged me 140 for it. Once a year I get it redone for 35 and they wash your car. I believe some people call it rust proofing.

don't drive in the saltwater,

if you could buy a beater do it!!!

a 2000 dollar beater would be cheaper than repairs

i agree with the japanese statement, their metal does last longer

i am just stoked to live here and have these problems, i would not wanna live up north and deal with snow and cold for nuthing

give me the heat, rust, sand any day!!!!!

Use a garden sprayer and spray it down with saltX it kills the salt. You mix it with water. Works well.

Before I brought my 4runner to the island, I got under it and applied this stuff

http://www.fluid-film.com

I grew up in the rustbelt, and found that hard ziebart type undercoatings can be problematic. They tend to trap moisture when applied and tend to crack and fall off, creating points where salt and water can accumulate. So, I went with an oil-based approach with the understanding that I'll have to reapply every year.

But yeah, toyota FTW. Great vehicles, though even used they are pricey for what you get.

But I'm certain that porkfetus ain't complaining. Wink

Ziebart at Sams Crowe Ford will spray a product to kill the rust you already have, then apply an undercoating the next day. Re-apply once a year and you should be good. I would keep spraying water on the under side of the truck even with the undercoating, when you get off the beach. DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH THE SALTWATER if at all possible. I see people all the time driving through the saltwater on the beach because the tide comes up and they don't want to deal with the soft sand....big mistake.

Like the old saying goes. "you get what you pay for", and that's usually true. Nobody HAS to buy a new vehicle, let someone else take the depreciation!!! When I bought my truck it had 70,000 miles on it but was only two years old. They were all commuter miles and the lot let me take it to a friend's garage so that he could put it on the rack and give it a good once over, (a GREAT plan). he said that it looked almost new, which it did to me too. Book on it was $14,000+ but we got it for $11,400, and it's STILL the best investment that I've ever made. No fluid leaks, no rust, no rattles and still runs as good as the day I bought it AND gets even better mileage because of some of my upgrades/changes.

100,000 miles and 9 years later I wouldn't have done anything different! Cool Wink

Kind of like your boat dude: you paid more than a Panga Marine would have cost but got a better boat for your money, and now you're happy! Very Happy
