Actually it is a Cicada. I never knew this until i had a lot of big hornets around my house and read up on them to kill them more effectively. Turns out these particular hornets are called cicada killers and i had a bunch of cicada around my house.

My wife says I am full of useless information, among other things.

Those cicada killers are wicked. About the size of my kid's fist, and they are awesome to watch them take down a buzzing cicada in mid air.

The bug version of a peregrine falcon.

Class Insecta, Order Homoptera, Family Cicadidae, Genus Magicicada (17 year locust). Chihuahua! College finally pays off - I've been waiting 30 years to use what I memorized for an Entomology exam! It did, didn't it? Wait. On second thought, all of this puts me no closer to catching a 32" speckled trout than before. Never mind.
