Well it was raining when I woke up, but I packed the last of the gear and headed out about 6:30. Two stops on the way; one for breakfast and lunch tacos. (TIP! Leave the lunch taco on your dashboard and in the foil and it was still warm at 12:00) The second was the Bait Bucket for some dead shrimp to catch whiting with. Got to the sticks about 7:15 and was shocked that no one was there. So I got my favorite spot and rigged up a whiting rig and just Tyler told me, the reel backlashed on me since it hadn't been used for awhile. Well it was a cutter and I manage to save the shock leader and the fishing rig. Cleared the reel and tied it back on using Alberto's knot. Well let's try that again with a little adjustment. Ok now I was fishing. Caught a small whiting and cut him up and put on the big rod and then started to castnet for mullet.
The mullet were there but elusive they were in the first gut but it was low tide and so once I figured out where they were I caught enough for the day's fishing. Well know both rods with live finger mullet in the first gut and waded out and started tossing a gold spoon. No takers on any rods.
With the low tide and almost zero current the weed was stuck on the edge of the first gut. The big rod had no problem staying clear of it but my 10 ft. was always getting weed on it. Just enough to be annoying. Nothing happened until 11:00 a.m. I was walking out to clear some weed off my line and enjoying an adult beverage when I got done clearing the first big chunk of weed off I felt something move the line and so I ran back to the beach and placed my beverage by the truck with great haste and mad a dash for the rod. The rod tip never moved and I never saw the strike, it was 23" trout. Well dinner's taken care of at least. One more small trout and a nice sized Spanish Mackeral. There were some guys next to me yakking out cut whiting that caught 2 oversized reds right after I caught my fish. Then everything shut down at 12:00. Had lunch and stayed until 1:30 with no more takers. Great day just kinda slow.
Pics below are a Bull Sized Red a fellow fishman caught and the fish I caught.
Enjoy SM

Nice fish!
I was out there in that area too...
Only managed to catch a monster pompano on a gotcha plug which I thought was pretty cool. |
