Went down to PINS friday and stopped at various places between the 20 and 30 catching mainly pompano on peeled shrimp and a couple reds on artificials. Met up later that evening with a friend that has to work M-F and can only fish weekends. To me, M-F is for fishing and the weekends are for cleaning your gear and getting ready for another week of fishing. Very Happy
After my friend arrived, he started to catch up with me by catching pompano and one 23"red. All reds caught were between 21" and 27 1/2." The surf was full of young pompano, hopefully a sign of what to expect this fall. Whitting were dime a dozen, but still fun.
Saturday was another great day with low winds and a fairly calm surf for at least half of the day and then the wind and surf started to pick up.
We moved down to the 40's and the water was a little cloudy out for the first 100 yards. Didn't bother us as the reds were there also along with a couple more pomps. Sorry to say no trout were caught, must of been the way I was holding my mouth. Saturday evening turned into a bunch of fried reds and foil wrapped pomps, fried zuchinni and squash with fries and home grown tomatos washed down with adult beverages. After that, my girlish figure had vanished and the dreaded beer belly reappeared. Embarassed
Sunday started out fair and didn't improve so we started back to the pavement to head home. I told my friend to find a weekend job so we didn't have to play in the crowds of people on the weekends.
Sorry no pictures with this report but will try to get a camera for future trips.
Now for my Soap Box Time. Blind fold the wife and runs the kids out of the room. Laughing
I've been fishing the island for a little over forty years and get more depressed over disrespectful people, people with no common sense and people that just don't give a flip.
No.1- Got down to about the 10 mile marker where some guy and girl were playing with three dogs in the water and their truck was parked up by the high road with a rod sticking out of the bed. I had my long rods in their holders on the front of my truck and out of the corner of my eye I see this guy running towards me with his arms waving in the air like an outraged chimpanzee and cussing me out. Yes my long rods caught his line that crossed the right away for traffic so I stopped. Thats when one dog jumped up on the side of my truck and left his autograph with wet sand and claw marks, no problems, I'll wax it out. As for the cussing tick-turd, I told him the common sense thing was to put his rod at the waters edge and he wouldn't have this problem, instead of me tieing his tongue around his throat and driving on with his rod dragging behing my truck. Mad
No.2-People still parking in the right away, setting up camp and blocking the right away 20ft on either side of their camp with metal stakes or what ever is available and digging holes. Above all, watching a park ranger drive by these camps and not saying anything. Rolling Eyes
No.3-Stopped at the trash container at the pavement, got out to throw away my trash and watched a lazy inconsiderate punk miss the container and the trash fell to the ground and all he had to say was,"well there's other trash on the ground, it doesn't matter." I told him yea because of lazy punks like you. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad He just gave me that go to hell look and left. Wished I could have left when he did and dropped the trash at his house.
No friends I'm not going postal, just getting fed up with certain peoples attitudes. I'm really a nice ol' fart. Laughing Rolling Eyes

Its amazing , there are alot of jerks in this world. I could tell you some stories....I work for the government and they got their share of people with attitudes, greed, scam artists, its really sad. Sad It really doesn't matter anymore if you are a good employee, even supervision will try and drag you down into the cess pool.

It's a sad fact, the A-holes are always going to be with us. I think I met their posterboy along the ICW last week. Sadly, he was training two young fishermen in seamanship and interpersonal skills. It's like the guy says, "you can't fix stupid".

No new rules are needed. Just as with BHP and every other place where crowds of people congregate, ENFORCEMENT of existing rules is all that's needed to get most things up to snuff and running smoothly again! Rolling Eyes

The simple fact that 99.9% of the enforcers are employed by the city, county, state or federal government and/or are union members tells anyone with a brain all they need to know about why things continue to go downhill! Evil or Very Mad

Good post Tiderunner. Try as we did two weeks ago we couldn't land a single pomp.

Spot on with your observations, the traffic and the yahoos have gotten on everyone's bad side this summer with the increased traffic on PINS....even the rangers will tell you that it's been busier this year.

The recession maybe?

I've only managed to make down to PINS for surf fishing once, and that was some months ago. But I do remember feeling uncomfortable about where I was parked and where I had set up my rod holders.

If the hard packed sand at waters edge is a right-of-way, It would appear that you couldn't park along the surf line. That would also mean that you couldn't park higher on the sand and run a line from your truck holder across that right-of-way. Yet many trucks have holders installed so that you can do exactly that - fish from the vehicle.

So for the benefit of those who rarely surf fish could someone clarify exactly where you should:
Park your vehicle
Set up your holders
Set up your camp

I really am curious since I hear of driving the low road, driving the high road, and driving between the surf and the high tide line.

Which one is the legal Texas road on which North bound traffic has the right-of-way? Or is it all of them? Question

Place your rod holders at waters edge, then park between there and the high road or enough room for people to pass by. Idea
Pretty easy to read the beach where people will be driving at.

Thanks for the report tiderunner.

Some of those guys are just plain stupid. I had a white cherokee drive between my truck and surf saturday around the 9mm. My trucks 22' long so I like to park parallel to the beach about 6 feet from the surf. He caught an outgoing wave and went between almost hitting my 11 year old!! He got an earfull even though he never slowed down. I'm ready for winter! Seems like there's not as many yahoos when it's cold.

Your damned if you do and damned if you don't! I have tried it every way and you can't please everyone all of the time! I have had people almost run over my 7 year old my wife and come pretty close to my truck but hey I am heavily insured. You know the real fishermen when you see them. Always a smile and a wave. The cool fishermen even slow down when they drive by your camp. Even stop for some small talk. But then there are the supple bum*****! Mad dog looks driving recklessly reving there engines peeling out ,100% macho B.S.! Hey but that still won't stop me from visiting P.I.N.S. And I can't speak for the guys who dig fricken trenches and take up the whole beach from low road to the fricken dunes.

Tide Runner, great post man, and thanks for the report! We were in the 30's and noticed some guys blocking the low road! It sucked when we were coming off the beach on Sunday but made due. We just laughed and figured they didn't know any better..................maybe they did! There was one guy who REALLY blocked the low road and thought about giving him the number one sign when driving by, but oh well, life goes on! Thanks again!!!

Oh yeah, I even passed a camp somewhere in the 20's and they looked like a bunch of young party goer's and when the guy I was following had passed them they yelled at him "HEYYYYYYY" and I heard them and actually stopped in front of them and they just started laughing and said "Hey, how you doing?" I thought that they may have had lines out but they didn't! I guess THEY were just drinkin' and havin' a good time! I would have really of been pissed if I were in the high banks and would have gotten stuck!!!!

I think the rest of these boneheads' relatives must own boats/PWCs. Can't tell you how many times this summer I have.....

1. Been cut across my bow by a slower boat when I was the stand-on vessel, forcing me to come off plane and avoid hitting them.
2. Seen jetskiers and boaters who don't know the difference between no wake (5mph) and maximum wake (~8mph).
3. Folks who don't know that its illegal to run your jetski at full speed when you're 15 feet from a bunch of swimmers.

I've pretty much given up. I have stopped and tried to politely explain things but always get a #$@ you or something. One guy was like "I effing paid for this jetski and I can do whatever the eff I want with it".... this was shortly before he had to stuff it into a sand bank to avoid hitting a swimmer.

I don't know why I even bother paying attention to the rules. Society has pretty much forgotten about common courtesy. Now its every man for himself, screw you.

Am I seriously being a hard arse about this? Sometimes I wonder if I'm just being too uptight and should just let it slide.

Anyways, nice report. Good to hear about all the pomps. Some darn good eating!
