Thanks for mentioning that, Fishin Rod. I'll forward your post to City Councilmember Kevin Kieschnick (can't remember his avatar) and make a point of mentioning the situation in a LTTE.

I'm glad that nobody was killed...................................... it sounds like the media are blaming it all on mother nature, as usual. It looked to me to be a relatively mild day for that part of the world.

Anytime a landlubber heads out in a boat the conditions are "dangerous"............................................... to EVERYONE!

Packery is/was a pipe dream pushed to sell lots in the NPadre area. blue water access at the AransasPass was just too far to market the Island so this ditch was thrown in to appease buyers. it'll only get worse because no one is gonna wanna step up to dredge regularly. just a larger version of Fish Pass. that bar is gonna bite many more folks.

I think everyone should stay at home and not gamble on that whole risk/reward thingy. It really isn't a good idea for everyone to go offshore anyway.....it's definitely safer at home.

When the water was clear about 3 weeks ago, I swam out into the middle near the end of the jetties. Only about 12 feet in spots. Worse up the channel, only 8 feet in some spots. Saw a large Bertram leave a sand trail the entire way out. It has stabilized in depth, but the conditions on the day of the accident were marginal to poor, even for an experienced captain. The waves roll in the mouth of the pass on days like today (25+ winds and a strong falling tide).

hey, Amigo, as a boatless fisherman, I was all over the Packery thing. then I did a little looking around about the Tx surf. it's great for water flow to the Laguna, not so great for Gulf access. I've seen some pretty big boats stand on their stern going out. maybe there should be a sign or something to the fact that only CERTAIN folks are deemed worthy to run thru it.

It all comes down to common sense and boat handling experience in passes. You can't legislate either one: look at all of the morons on the highway!!! Rolling Eyes The most dangerous thing that most any of us will ever do is DRIVE every day!!!! Shocked

I've had my little 16' aluminum with a 40 hp out in Orange Beach pass [AL] in honest 6 footers, had it out in Destin pass MANY times in conditions at least that bad with an incoming tide and had it out at Packery a few times when it was blowing 25-30 from the SE and ROUGH. I've never had a problem because I take my time and know how to read waves.

When most people get in a boat the first thing that they do is pop a beer, and that's probably not the first one of the day. I never take alcohol with me in my boat when I'm going out into saltwater and I rarely take it with me on a local fishing trip to my home lake!!! Combine alcohol with no knowledge of boat handling, seamanship and the ability to read the waves and tides, then throw in a macho attitude and you get what you get. Laws, signs or whatever will never change that the same as they will never make lousy drivers into good ones! Wink

2 words natural selection. It sucks but I this is not the first and definitely not the last someone will capsize their boat when trying to cross the bar. People do not look at wave forecasts nor tide and current charts to see when the current will be at max ebb. If you don't know why that is bad you should not be operating a boat in that environment.

Money can buy a boat but can't buy smarts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's no one word for people like that but the one that comes to my mind is lucky DAes. If you can't tell how big the waves are before you go out then you have no business in the GOM and you need to stay in the bays are on dry land. I have a 30' off shore boat and if its looks to bad i turn around. if I'm already out and the wind kicks up and it look really bad tyring to come in packery i will run to port a i did it this year once already and have someone bring the truck are just shoot down the ditch back to the truck. i could have probably made it maybe but i had two women, three young kids, and a guy that can't swim very strong so why try it. so to port a we went. better safe than sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, that's what I mean. it's not for novices. the JFK bridge WITHOUT dividers and lane lines will work MOST of the time, for MOST folks on a nice day. throw in a little fog and, well, not so good.

nope, so they deserved what they got, hunh? how about yer grandparents in that boat?

2 words natural selection.
same as above.

exactly, which is why the Surface Transportation Dpt has the laws and HWY restrictions we have.

what I'm saying is these folks were probably just gonna go out on a little cruise, but conditions and seamanship didn't mix. the channel is dangerous in many conditions and dang few know about it til too late.
probably the first time they'd been thru there.
