|
|
From Captain Billy Sandifer
I received a phone call from Mr. Anthony LaCotta; Editor and Chief of Field and Stream Magazine that I had been nominated for their Heroes of Conservation Award and got the award for Aug. My conservation efforts over the years will be in the August issue of Field and Stream. I have also been selected as one of 6 finalists for the year and they are paying all the expenses for me to be in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, 21 Oct., 09. Being selected for this honor pays $1,000. Going to DC for the semi-finals pays $4,000. plus expenses and the chosen winner gets a new Toyota Tundra. I don't feel as if I've done anything to justify all of this. It has been the back breaking work of volunteers that has caused all of this to transpire.
I stand humble and a little embarrased. This year has been a financial nightmare for my wife and me due to the economy and winds and this is a very unexpected blessing to us. I know I should feel very proud but actually I just feel overwhelmed and undeserving. Your Pal, Capt. Billy L. Sandifer |

Billy,
I would say it is indeed an honor you earned. Without you, the Big Shell cleanup would not have been started or have the tremendous beneficial impact it has today! You should be very proud, and just think of all the trash that Tundra could haul off the beach!!! |

When you are in Washington try to meet with all our elected representative and tell them what those son-of-a-bitches are doing to OUR park.
Capt. you've got a great opportunity to make a huge difference in this PINS stuff in the capacity your going to Washington in! |

Trust me that has occured to me. BTW the surf was an absolutely no life zone from one end to the other yesterday. Fishing for marijuana was better. I saw 4 bales and am told they picked up 1,300# on Texas beaches yesterday. Capt. Billy _________________ If we don't leave any there won't be any. |

Congratulations, it is well deserved. Looks like an opportunity to take the PINS issues to the right level, dang kinda sounds like Daniel Boone going up to the big house. |

That is neat as all heck.
Never been to PINS. Next time will be the first.
Capt. Billy, you want to drive?
I'm your huckleberry.
If that current is still slamming north, no telling where that debri might lodge. (Mommy, what's that big old square bag those seagulls are all attacking? I don't know son but they sure are flying funny, ain't it strange?)
Sincere congratulations sir.

Congratulations, I can't think of any one who deserves it more.
If there is any justice in this world, you'll be recognized as "Hero" of the Year. |

Congratulations on your nomination and award Capt. Billy. I understand that what you have done in this area is, in your eyes, only what a man should do. See a problem, work at fixing it. No big deal.
Except that people watch you, and are impressed with the extra effort you give and you are respected for that.
In July 2005, my family and I were lucky enough to camp for 6 days on PINS in between hurricane events. We camped at mile 3 and were up every morning before light thrashing the surf. You stopped at least two times for a minute or two to watch us. My then 15 year old had been reading your Gulf Coast Connection articles and recognised your Suburban. He was thrilled to know that Capt. Billy Sandifer watched HIM fish. He puts great stock into your words and philosiphies to this day.
Last year, here in Mertzon, 400 miles away from PINS, I and several other citizens finally reached the saturation point at having to look at a part of our beautiful creek continually being trashed and degraded. We stood up (finally), not because we are special but because we were sick of looking at the mess and sick of ourselves for just looking at the mess.
You and your work at PINS as well as your love for the little things that make our world tick were, in great part, what inspired me to try and become a part of a solution.
You have done what, simply, a man should do. No fanfare there. But somehow you got noticed, and people wanted to emulate what you have accomplished, and many did, and that was good. And many good things have been done due to your influence, many many miles away, as here in Mertzon.
So I, for one applaud you. You should, just ever so briefly, step forward and take a well deserved bow. |
