Taking Dillon and Danny (grandsons) shark fishing first week in June. We'll be taking the zodiac out past the 3rd bar and was wondering how deep the water is out there, say out around 55mm. We never have put a float on our shark rigs before and was wondering how to go about attaching it and where. We thought it would be fun to watch where the line goes when we get a run. Hope you guys can help us with this questions. Will post pics when we get back. Thanks _________________ fishuntfishuntfishuntfishuntfishuntfishuntfish. depending on exactly where you set up the water past the last set of breakers can be anywhere from 10 feet deep to 30 feet. It can be even deeper in some holes. Bob Hall has a running chart of the average depth of the water as the tide shifts up and down. That might help.

On a basic 30 ft. shark leader, I run about 5-10 ft. (depending on depth of water) of heavy weedeater line from the float to a longliner clip. As I drop the bait I clip the float in just below the swivel at the top of the leader. Shorter leader...longer float line. Deeper water...longer float line. You want to make sure the float line has enough slack so that the surf doesn't create enough tug on the line to break your weight loose. The main purpose of the float is to find your leader should you get cut off. Some people will also use floats with shorter lines to help the line angle over the bar but that can also create pull on the weight so you may not want to do that if the surf is rough. Put a piece of reflective tape around the float and its easier to spot it out with a spotlight at night to check on it. Painting it bright orange or yellow will also help in spotting it any time of day. _________________ Eagles may soar...but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. |
